Tips for Parents on Children’s Health.
1. You are what you eat. We need to start believing this. Healthy heart, bones, teeth and minds starts with a healthy diet.
2. Lead by example. If it is good for your kids it is good for you too. Your kid is much more likely to go along with it if they see you doing it too!
3. Keep it simple. Don’t attempt too much too soon. For example 1 change at a time. Switching from fizzy drink to water or a packet of crisp to a fruit. These small changes at a time can make major differences.
4. Aim for at least 5 fruit and veggies per day. You might even start with 1 a day and then build it up to 5 portions daily. Choose fruit and veg which your child likes.
5. Nothing should be banned. Sweets, chocolates, biscuits, ice cream or any favourite food are not bad. Too many too often can be. Banning them completely can lead to resentment and rebellion!! Rather make it a weekend or occasional treat.
6. Try and not use food as a reward or punishment. If we learn to associate sweet foods with comfort where do we turn every time we have a bad experience? Reward good behaviour with recognition and praise.
7. Make exercise a daily part of life!! Physical activity is important for health and growth in kids.
If you are concerned about a health issue or how to approach a weighty issues with your children ask for help!! Speak to your GP, Dietician or any health professional.
