MY STIFF UPPER LIP HURTS

I see many people struggling with their emotions these days. My heart aches for them, and if I could snap my fingers and take away their pain, believe me, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

I came across this quote which really made me think.

“You do not get to choose the events that come your way nor the sorrows that interrupt your life. They will likely be a surprise to you, catching you off guard and unprepared. You may hold your head and lament your weak condition and wonder what you ought to do. To suffer, that is common to all. To suffer and still keep your composure, your faith, and your smile, that is remarkable. Pain will change you more profoundly than success or good fortune. Suffering shapes your perception of life, your values and priorities, and your goals and dreams. Your pain is changing you.” – Pastor David Crosby

No one wants to be in emotional pain or holding back tears all the time. And many people who don’t carry that burden think you should just have a stiff upper lip, or just “get over it”. If you don’t face suppressed emotions, you’ll stay stuck in “getting over it” mentality, and it’ll become impossible for you to heal. You might believe that the pain is long gone, but it only moved from the conscious to the unconscious mind where it gained more power over your behavior. Remember, denied feelings turn into limiting beliefs.

If your stiff upper life is getting just too heavy to hold up, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). Using this gentle hands-on modality, we’ll work with you to remove those limiting beliefs that are keeping you stuck in your story and stuck in your pain.

Remember, people who keep stiff upper lips find it’s darn hard to smile.

DECIDE

Life is sometimes full of inconvenient, disappointing, annoying struggle. And we all have made mistakes and regret things from the past. But here’s a news flash, boys and girls, you are not your mistakes, and you are not your struggles, and you are present today, in this moment, with the power to change and shape your day and your future.

My struggles and mistakes do not define me, but the way I’m going to face it and handle it will help shape me as a person. I can choose to come prepared to challenging situations to help move things along, and to be patient and kind to anyone I’m going to deal with to help resolve any problem.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross said, “The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of those depths.”

Long story short: if there is no struggle, there is no progress.

So, the struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow. Strength doesn’t come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through struggles and decide not to give up, that, my friends, is strength.

Life has two rules:
#1. Never quit.
#2. Always remember Rule #1.

Have a great week.

HERE COMES THE SUN

It’s officially been Spring for a week now. I love Spring! The days are warmer and there’s way more sunlight. Even though where I live the Earth won’t be springing forth with new growth quite yet, it can still be a time of renewal, rebirth, and change.

Change. Change is a part of growing, improving, and becoming. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, how painful the changes, how confused you are and how lonely it will be. This is the path of growing which we all need to take until one day we’ll look back and thank ourselves for not giving up.

Change is what happens when you realize that some of the stuff you’ve been carrying around just doesn’t matter anymore. Change brings renewal, new beginnings, and . . . hope.

You know, life depends on change and renewal. So on this first day of Spring, take time to:
• rebuild your strength,
• regain your balance,
• revive your energy,
• refresh your mind, and
• rekindle your soul.

Spring, my friends, is all about new beginnings, and the secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings. It’s all about letting the “sun” into your life.

As the Beatles said, “Here comes the sun, and I say, it’s all right.”

Have a sunny weekend.

ONE BAD APPLE

I love fruit. I love apples, oranges, pineapple, and especially berries: blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries. Love them! I throw a lot of frozen organic berries in my protein shakes. The thing is, when you buy fresh fruit, as soon as you get it home from the store you have to take it out of the bag, box, or tray and pick through it to make sure there aren’t any pieces that are beginning to go bad. This is very important. Why? I’m sure you know.

If you take a piece of rotten fruit and place it beside perfectly good fruit, what happens? The mold from the rotten fruit spreads over to the good fruit and both end up, well, rotten.

Question: what happens to us when we surround ourselves with negative, rude, unhappy, toxic people? If we’re not careful, we can become just like them. And, there is clear evidence showing that there is a distinct link between toxic relationships and overall stress and health. Negative people in your life can actually raise your overall body inflammation and compromise your immune system. Negative people can actually make you sick.

Being around positive people can boost your growth, well-being, and motivation. They support you, offer honest feedback, and care about your goals and happiness. Strong social support improves health, helps manage stress, and lowers disease risk. Good people enhance both your emotional and physical state.

So surround yourself with good, positive people who provide value in your life, who make you laugh, and who keep uplifting your positivity and contribute to your health and happiness.

They say that one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch; however, people aren’t apples. Don’t let the poor choices or actions of one person spoil the way you feel about all people or about yourself. If you’re looking for them, you’ll soon find out that there are a lot of awesome apples out there!

SPRING CLEANING YOUR LIFE

It’s officially Spring, and the idea of using the Spring season as motivation for a personal spring-cleaning is huge. It can be a great time to clear out the untidy, muddled, and messy stuff in your life.

Consider this quote from Peter Walsh: “What I know for sure is that when you declutter – whether it’s in your home, your head, or your heart – it is astounding what will flow into that space that will enrich you, your life, and your family.”

Love that.

5 Simple Ways to Spring Clean Your Entire Life:
1. Review your Relationships. If the past few years have taught us anything, it's that we need to invest our time and energy in the things and people that are most precious to us.
2. Detox Your Diet. Instead of stressing about the foods you want to eliminate from your diet, focus instead on stocking your fridge and pantry with the healthier items you want to eat more of.
3. Reset Your Wardrobe. The Spring season is a great excuse to lose the clothes that don’t flatter or fit and to edit and reorganize your closet. Get ready to donate, sell, or toss those duds that aren’t working for you.
4. Declutter Your Documents. Digital: Delete apps that you haven’t used for months and clean up your emails. Physical: Put all your physical bills and mail into a box and spend 15 minutes a week going through the piles to prioritize time-sensitive items. Have a designated file to safely store important forms, records, and documents.
5. Spruce Up Your Space. Cleaning your whole house may seem daunting, so try small tasks that will make a big difference. Clean a small surface like your dining table, take 15 minutes to vacuum those corners you don’t seem to get to, and hang your coats and seasonal accessories to clear your entranceway. Doing small chores daily can make your space calmer and more comfortable.

And finally, the biggest payoff for spring-cleaning your life is that letting go of physical and emotional clutter also declutters your mind and soul. That, my friends, is priceless.

NUTS TO YOU

We have a dear friend down in the States named Jay. Some years ago he lived up here in Canada for a couple of years and we’ve kept in touch with him and his growing family ever since. He is a very loving, positive, faith-filled, hard-working, happy man with a great sense of humor. One day he said something that made me laugh so hard I snort laughed. At the time, my husband had said something ridiculous (shocking! lol). Jay calmly looked at him, shook his head and said, “The squirrels are gonna getcha ‘cause you’re nuts.” Classic! It’s still a catchphrase in our family.

You know, I think being a little nuts is helpful. Sometimes the only way to stay sane is to go a little crazy. And sometimes you need a little bit of insanity to do great things.

The truth is, I think a lot of us have being going a little nuts since Covid-19 began years ago. And, I think the insanity continues with what is happening in the world today. Many of us must constantly fight feeling scattered. Many feel like they’re on autopilot from mental and physical fatigue. The hardest thing for all of us right now is being present and living for and in the moment.

Stress does funny things to people. It can cause us to rise to great heights and sink to terrible depths. It can cause us to say and do ridiculous things (some good, some bad): things we wouldn’t normally say or do when we’re not feeling ‘nuts’. I do like what Marilyn Munroe said, though. “It’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than to be absolutely boring.” How true.

At this time in history, I think maybe people look at others who are upbeat, positive, and looking forward to the future as being nuts. It’s almost like there’s something wrong with us if we’re happy. Now THAT’S nuts!

So, my friends . . . Choose to be happy. It’ll drive people NUTS!

The squirrels will be looking for you. Have a great weekend. And Happy first day of Spring!

ON MAGNIFICATION . . .

I was riding the pity pony pretty hard yesterday, and all it did was make me grumpy and tired. After some self-reflection, a couple of episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (nerd alert), some meditation and prayer, I’m feeling better now and ready to get back in the game. John Maxwell (love him) wrote:

“Exceptionally hard decisions can deplete your energy to the point at which you finally cave in. If you mentally crumble and degenerate into negative thinking, you’ll magnify the problem to the point where it can haunt you.”

You know, I really think - no, I really believe - that life is a beautiful thing, and that we should live according to that belief. We’ve got to magnify all our better feelings and better urges and better conscious ideas because that’s how we evolve and improve and grow in life.

So, don’t make yourself small by magnifying negative thinking and beliefs. Put down that magnifying glass and pick up the mirror. Look yourself straight in the eyes and with those eyes magnify your successes as much as your disappointments.

I guarantee you’ll be much happier.

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

A lot of people are feeling really bummed out because of what’s going on in the world. I think we need some Dr. Seuss today.

“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” – Dr. Seuss.
Your success is there, but you have to go get it. Today is the day. Get started.

“Today I shall behave as if this is the day I will be remembered.” – Dr. Seuss
You never know when you might finally break through. Try to wake up every morning with the attitude that today may be that day.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”
- Dr. Seuss
Feeling stuck on a problem? You may be over-complicating things. Step back and look for the simplest solution out there. Usually, it’s the best.

“On and on you will hike. And I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.” – Dr. Seuss
Just like there’s no sure way to succeed, there’s no sure way to solve all of your problems either. But there is a sure way to not solve them; avoid them. And to that end . . .

“You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.” – Dr. Seuss
So many times, we’re so scared to see the bad that we shut ourselves up and in, and then we end up missing the good. Don’t be afraid and don’t avoid. Take it all in.

This mess the world is in isn’t going to last forever.

Hang in there.

INVEST IN YOURSELF

I LOVE beautiful, good quality handbags. To me, a well-constructed purse made from beautiful and functional materials is a work of art. And - I generally really look after them, because I want them around and looking good for as long as possible.

Now to switch gears . . . Did you know that exercising 150 minutes per week equals a 30% less mortality rate from all causes?

WHAT?! That is a HUGE benefit for moving your body and getting sweaty for just over 20 minutes per day. And talking about benefits, exercise not only changes your body, it changes your mind and your mood. But I also think (and here’s the kicker) that TO CHANGE YOUR BODY YOU MUST FIRST CHANGE YOUR MIND.

If you’re having trouble wrapping your head around the idea of exercising, and think that it’s more of a punishment for something you ate rather than a celebration of what your body can do, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). We’ll work with you to remove that subconscious interference that is causing your stinking thinking and help you get moving (pun intended) along your road to healthy and happy.

Contact us today and invest in yourself. Why? Because good health is the best wealth. After all, your body will be around a lot longer than that expensive handbag.

ARE YOU FEELING THE CRAVING OR CRAVING THE FEELING?

Has this thought ever crossed your mind? “How can I be hungry when I just ate lunch an hour ago?” My mentors at Morter HealthSystem help to explain this.

“First, it's important to distinguish between a craving and actual hunger. Craving food is all about an associated feeling and not a stomach rumble. A hungry stomach will growl, cramp, and physically get your attention. While a craving comes with a fierce desire for a particular food.”

“Emotional cravings (often followed by emotional eating) can be linked to our upbringing. Children will often become unsuspecting emotional consumers due to their well-meaning parents trying to comfort and console their traumatic experiences. Each, in its way, feeds a subconscious pattern connecting emotion with food, ingrained deep within the sub-cortex (the sub-conscious mind).” – Morter HealthSystem

Many people eat foods like hamburgers, pizza, or sweets when feeling excited or upset. These habits are linked to emotional experiences and become normal patterns, leading to emotional eating and overeating that isn't driven by true hunger.

So, what to do? First, learn to recognize the onset of the pattern—document when you're eating at times other than your regular mealtimes. How did you feel at that exact moment? Were you upset, happy, sad, or overwhelmed? Record how you feel over time to learn to recognize your emotional eating pattern or patterns.

Next, contact us at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). We can help you change or interrupt those patterns, unlock the power of your mind, and get you back on the road to healthy and happy.

And please, don't deny yourself every time. The occasional cookie, chocolate bar, or ice cream won't harm you - if you consume them in moderation. Remember, feeling "guilty" can be much more harmful than indulgence!

Emotional eating doesn’t heal emotional issues. Whatever your problem is, you won’t find the answer in the fridge.

FIERCE
“Though she be but little, she is fierce.”- William Shakespeare
What does it mean to be fierce? It can mean being hostile, violent, and destructive. But it can also mean being extremely powerful and intense, vigorous, or passionate in activity and feeling.

I like the latter definition.

Are you fierce? Sometimes we are on journeys that occasionally require us to be fierce: to be passionate and powerful, vital and vigorous in our daily interactions and activities. And that’s perfectly okay.

But maybe you’re saying, I’m more of a gentle soul. You are allowed to be soft but strong, and fierce yet fragile. And you can always be fiercely authentic. You know, you don’t have to choose between being gentle and fierce. Both exist in nature, and both exist in you. And that’s okay, too. You can learn to understand how to nourish them both, and when applicable, use them both unapologetically. You can fiercely be the person you would look up to.

So - remember to be fierce at times. Be the exception. Why?

Because you’ve got something they don’t. You’re the one and only you.

And that, my friends, is fierce.

Happy International Women’s Day.
