Carer stress isn’t something to be endured in silence.

Aged care reform was meant to make life easier.

For many older Australians and their families, it’s doing the opposite.

At Freewave, we see people delaying help because they’re worried about costs.

Families overwhelmed by paperwork and confusing rules.

Older people stepping back from support because the system feels confronting or simply too hard to navigate.

Getting care shouldn’t require strength just to ask for help.

It shouldn’t leave people feeling embarrassed, confused, or like a burden.

We believe care should be:
• Human and respectful
• Built around dignity and choice
• Designed to fit real lives, not just policies

If you’re unsure where to start, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Our free advisory service is here to listen, explain your options clearly, and help you understand what support is available.

We see it every day - the love, worry, advocacy and quiet strength of families and carers standing beside the older people in their lives.

Growing older should never mean losing your voice, your choices, or your dignity. And no family should feel alone in speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

That’s why we’re sharing this. Because protecting the rights of older people isn’t just policy - it’s personal. It’s about real people, real families and making sure every older person is treated with the respect they deserve.

We’re proud to support the call to strengthen and uphold the human rights of older Australians.

This week we join the Australian Human Rights Commission in the call for worldwide action to promote and protect the rights of older people. From 1–7 February, people around the world are coming together for the Global Rally for Older People’s Rights.
Despite ageing populations everywhere, there is still no binding UN convention dedicated to protecting the human rights of older people. That needs to change.
In 2026, the United Nations begins drafting a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons and Australia has an important role to play. The Australian Government’s decision to support this historic process is welcome. We encourage all political parties and governments of Australia to support this initiative.
Importantly the voices of older people must be heard in the drafting of such an important international instrument.

Sometimes the most meaningful feedback comes from people going through some of life’s hardest moments.

Rod reached out to Freewave while trying to support his late father. He wasn’t a client - he just needed guidance during a really difficult time. He shared these beautiful words with us:

“You’re a breath of fresh air and clearly put people before business… You couldn’t have been more understanding, helpful and generous with your time… our community is all the better for you.”

Being able to help families with advice, direction and support - even when there’s no formal service in place - is something we believe truly matters in community care.

We also heard from Andrew, whose family is currently navigating care:

“The staff are compassionate, friendly, and highly professional, and they consistently go above and beyond. Communication with families is excellent, and I always feel reassured knowing my loved one is in safe hands.”

That feeling of reassurance - knowing someone kind, capable and trustworthy is walking alongside your family - is exactly what we hope to provide every day.

Thank you, Rod and Andrew, for taking the time to share your experiences. And thank you to every family who places their trust in us. It’s a privilege to support our community in moments that really matter.

“I didn’t realise how exhausted I was until someone else stepped in.”

We hear this a lot from family carers.

Not because they don’t love the person they’re caring for. But because caring for someone you love is emotionally different to being a professional carer.

You’re not just managing medications and appointments.
You’re managing history. Roles. Guilt. Grief. Worry. Responsibility.

And most family carers don’t call themselves carers. They say, “I’m just a daughter.” “I’m just a husband.” “I’m just helping out.”

Until “helping out” becomes every day. And exhaustion creeps in quietly.

Bringing in support at home isn’t giving up. It’s protecting the relationship — so time together can feel more like being family again, not just managing care.

At Freewave, we don’t just support the older person in the home. We support the people who love them too.

Because care works best when no one is carrying it alone.

Good care shouldn’t feel rushed.

In home and community care, the most important moments often happen in the quiet, everyday routines.

When visits are rushed, the important things can get squeezed out - the conversation, the reassurance and the time to notice if something has changed. Care becomes task-focused instead of person-focused.

Unhurried care looks different.

It looks like a support worker taking a moment to ask how someone is really feeling.
It looks like noticing the mail hasn’t been brought in.
It looks like seeing that a usually tidy kitchen hasn’t been touched.
It looks like picking up on worry, loneliness, or fatigue that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Those small moments are often where the biggest differences are made.

At Freewave, we believe quality care includes the time to be present, not just the time to complete tasks. Because supporting someone at home is about more than a checklist - it’s about seeing the whole person.

Consistency isn’t a “nice to have” in home care. It’s the whole point.

Right now, many older people and families aren’t asking for more services. They’re asking for less change.

Less new faces.
Less roster reshuffles.
Less explaining the same routines over and over.

In home and community care, consistency is clinical, not just convenient.

When support workers visit regularly, they notice the small things:
• Subtle changes in mobility
• A shift in mood or appetite
• When someone who is usually chatty goes quiet
• Early signs that something just isn’t quite right

Those observations matter. They help prevent hospital visits. They catch issues early. They build trust. And trust is what allows care to actually work.

At Freewave, we believe good care starts with dependable relationships - not just filled shifts.

Because real quality in aged care isn’t loud. It looks like turning up, knowing the person and paying attention.

This week we spoke with a carer who is doing everything they can - and quietly running on empty.

They’re supporting a loved one with increasing care needs, juggling appointments, managing medications and navigating services… while also carrying deep personal grief after multiple recent family losses. Life hasn’t slowed down to make space for mourning. The caring role hasn’t paused. The expectations haven’t lifted.

On top of this are the everyday pressures many carers face - work demands, financial strain, family responsibilities, broken sleep and the constant feeling of being torn between what needs doing and what’s humanly possible.

It’s a story we hear far too often. And it’s why support for carers matters so much.

At Freewave, we want carers to know there is dedicated help available beyond the immediate caring role. Carer Gateway is the Australian Government’s national support service for carers, delivered locally by experienced community organisations who understand the realities of caring.

Through Carer Gateway, carers can access:
• Counselling and emotional support
• Practical coaching and guidance
• Help navigating services and systems
• Peer support groups to reduce isolation
• Respite and short-term supports when things feel unmanageable

This is compassionate, confidential and respectful support focused on the carer’s wellbeing - because carers need care too.

If you’re supporting someone and feeling stretched thin, please know this: struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human. Reaching out for support is a strong and important step.

Many older people and families are feeling worried about the cost of care right now.

This is a really helpful resource that explains what support may be available if paying aged care fees feels overwhelming.

Independent advice and advocacy can make a big difference, and we encourage anyone who’s unsure to take a look and get the right information.

Great care doesn’t come from paperwork. It comes from people.

You can have plans, systems and processes - but what truly makes the difference is having support workers who know you, understand your routines and notice the small changes that matter.

When care is consistent, workers can spot early signs that something isn’t quite right and respond before small issues become bigger problems. That means safer care, stronger relationships and more peace of mind for everyone involved.

At Freewave, we design our services around continuity. We believe care works best when the same familiar faces show up - people who care, who notice and who take responsibility.

Because care isn’t just about getting tasks done. It’s about dignity, trust and feeling safe in your own home.

This is how we’re raising the bar.

Consistency in care isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s everything.

Too many people tell us they feel unsafe or unseen when support workers keep changing. Small changes in mood, routine or health can go unnoticed - and that matters.

At Freewave, we do things differently. We prioritise continuity, so the people supporting you know you, and you know them. That familiarity helps prevent issues before they arise, builds trust and makes care safer, stronger and more respectful.

Because care isn’t just about tasks - it’s about people, relationships and peace of mind.

If you or a loved one want care that truly sees, knows and supports you, Freewave is here.
