Postpartum Depression and essential oils

Postpartum depression (PPD) occurs in about 23%-33% of mothers and is more common among younger mothers (25 and younger). PPD can occur due to a dramatic decline in hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones) after giving birth combined with a lack of sleep and feelings of overwhelm. A review article concluded that inhalation of lavender essential oil can help reduce PPD.
