A brief explanation about our change from Refuge Recovery Portland, Maine to Portland Recovery Dharma at PRCC:

As the result of a law suit between the Refuge Recovery board of directors and its founder Noah Levine, Refuge Recovery (RR) has split into two distinct entities: Refuge Recovery World Services and Recovery Dharma. Each individual RR community has had to decide their own path forward in the midst of these changes and which group they wish to affiliate themselves with. RR Rockland, along with all of the other RR communities now established in Maine (Rockland, Machias and Caribou), has decided to move forward with Recovery Dharma.

What does this mean? Fundamentally, the mission and structure of our local meetings will remain the same. Our name has now changed to Portland Recovery Dharma at PRCC, and our primary text will be the Recovery Dharma book. As always, we will continue to include other books related to Buddhism and recovery in our meetings. Our commitment as a peer-led community using the teachings and practices of Buddhism to heal from the pain of addiction remains unchanged.

Our Story

PORTLAND RECOVERY DHARMA·MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 2019·

Recovery Dharma is a peer-led movement using Buddhist practices and principles to overcome addiction.

We believe that the traditional Buddhist teachings (“Dharma”) offer a powerful approach to healing from addiction and living a life of true freedom. By following a balanced path of understanding, ethical behavior, and mindfulness, all beings have the potential to find happiness and free themselves from the suffering of repetitive craving. We are a community of people dedicated to the practices of mindfulness, compassion, forgiveness, and generosity, using meditation and kindness to heal the pain and suffering that addiction has caused in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Our weekly meetings include guided meditations, readings from the Recovery Dharma book or other Buddhist texts, group sharing and discussion. Open to people of all backgrounds and respectful of all recovery paths, these meetings are appropriate for anyone in, or interested in recovery from all forms of addictive behavior. No prior meditation experience or knowledge of Buddhism is necessary. There are currently two weekly meetings in Portland, Maine: Saturdays 5-6:30 pm Tuesdays 5:30-6:45 pm @ The Portland Recovery Community Center (PRCC) 468 Forest Ave, Portland, ME 04101
