Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions affect nearly 1 in 3 people in the UK, and yet they remain under-recognised in national health priorities.

From arthritis and back pain to osteoporosis, MSK conditions are a leading cause of pain, disability, and workplace absence. They impact 20 million people, cost the economy billions in lost productivity.

But this is not just a health system issue, it’s a quality of life issue. MSK conditions limit independence, mobility, and participation in work, family, and community life. Many are chronic and progressive, particularly affecting people in deprived and underserved communities.

We welcome the ambitions in the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan to shift care towards prevention, digital innovation, and community services. But this shift must include MSK.

We are calling for:
- A Modern Service Framework for MSK
- Investment in scalable prevention campaigns across the life course
- MSK services in every neighbourhood
- Guaranteed rapid access to early intervention
- A national persistent pain improvement programme
- Stronger links between MSK, work, and health
- A robust workforce plan valuing Allied Health Professionals and the wider

MSK workforce - MSK must be fully integrated into the future of the NHS if we are to reduce pain, restore independence and keep people well and in work. Sport Rehabilitators skillset and knowledge perfectly matches these requirements.

During Bone and Joint Week 2025, we urge decision-makers to recognise MSK for what it is: a major public health challenge and an opportunity for transformative change.

🧠 The Science Behind Female Strength Training: It’s All About Neural Adaptations

Contrary to popular belief, women don’t need fundamentally different strength training approaches than men. However, understanding HOW we develop strength reveals fascinating insights about female physiology.

Key Insight: Women primarily build strength through neural adaptations rather than muscle mass increases.

Here’s what happens:
• The brain becomes more efficient at sending signals to muscles
• Muscle contraction becomes more coordinated and forceful
• Strength gains occur through improved nervous system function
• This “brain over brawn” approach doesn’t result in bulky muscles

💪 What This Means for Training:
Women benefit tremendously from “functional” movements that mirror real-life activities and sports. When strength training incorporates movement patterns we use daily (like squats for runners), we train our brains to communicate with muscles more efficiently.

The result? Better performance in activities we love AND reduced injury risk.

🏃‍♀️ Real-World Application:
Think about it - how many times have you heard someone say they injured their back carrying something heavy or tweaked their knee during a run? Functional strength training helps prevent these common scenarios by teaching our nervous system to coordinate movement patterns effectively.

The bottom line: Strength training for women isn’t about building bulk - it’s about building better movement patterns and neural efficiency.
