Recently, a few of my patients have been horses whose owners have noticed that they are windsucking more than usual and appear to be more stressed and showing signs usually associated with ulcers EGUS. Windsucking can have detrimental effects on the health of horses who display this behaviour. These include increased prevalence of dental abnormalities (if they do it whilst cribbing), gastric ulceration, musculoskeletal issues, poor body condition and colic.
Boredom, stress, habit and addiction are all possible courses of windsucking. Long spells in the stable with little or no exercise and mind stimulation can cause a horse to become stressed and so it windsucks to relieve the boredom. A high concentrate/low fibre diet increases stomach acidity leading to discomfort and sometimes EGUS. The resultant gulping of air produces a calming, painkilling endorphin release.

Bowen cannot and will not cure windsucking but it will help to relax and de stress your horse and so he/she will windsuck less. It will calm the stomach and relax any muscle tension in the poll, neck, shoulders, back and girth area.
The horses I have treated have shown a marked improvement in the tension in the muscles and are more relaxed in the stable and when ridden, resulting in them windsucking less.
Remember to ALWAYS seek your vets advice if you are at all worried about your horses condition, behaviour or if you are at all concerned that your horse could be suffering from EGUS

ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR HORSE.

We are all guilty of thinking that our horses are just plain misbehaving when they start to play up. We often forget to ask ourselves if there could be a reason for it, if it's not the norm. Sometimes the reason for such behaviour is your horse saying he or she is uncomfortable. I have brought this topic up because I have a confession to make, initially I put my 4 year old's bad behaviour down to him testing me.
I took him to the mounting block to get on as usual, but before I got my foot in to the stirrup he moved away. I told him to stand up and stop messing about, so bless him he did. We went out for a hack, not the most relaxed ride, but hay is a 4 year old, so I put it down to that.
The next day, the same happened again at the mounting block. The hack out was not good and consistent of him spooking and planting himself in the middle of the road at every opportunity.
After the initial disappointment, I put my sensible head on and thought about the fact that this behaviour was not the characteristic for my horse even though he is a four year old. Perhaps he was uncomfortable? The next day I ran my hand down his back and over his quarters and wow did he sit down. Poor chap had been trying to tell me he was sore but I hadn't listened.
I gave him a Bowen treatment and as he was so sore he had the next 3 days off. On the fourth day I led him to the mounting block, where he hesitated briefly as he thought it may hurt, but let me get on and he was a good boy to ride. Day 5 he was very happy to stand at the mounting block, so lesson learned.
The moral of the story is...listen to your horse and trust in your instincts. If there is a problem please get it sorted before an even bigger one is created. Your horse will love you for it and time spent in the saddle will be much more relaxed and enjoyable for both of you.

WHAT IS BOWEN?
A lot of people ask me to explain what Bowen therapy is and how it works as it's so hard for them to explain it to other people.
I hope the following explanation will enable people to understand it better, make it easier to explain to others and answer any question you may have. Please feel free to signpost others to this page to enable them to find out more about Bowen if they wish.
Equine Bowen therapy is non invasive, promotes healing, pain relief and energy balance.
It addresses the whole central nervous system, helps release muscle spasm, stimulates the lymphatic system, aids the circulatory, urinary, and digestive systems and is very relaxing.
We practitioners use our fingers and thumbs over precise points on the body using a gentle rolling action thereby affecting muscles, ligaments and tendons.
During the treatment the horse is left to rest for two minutes between moves. This allows the body to absorb each move, allowing any adjustments to take place. There is no manipulation of hard tissue.
A treatment takes about 45 minutes.
Single 'top up' treatments can be beneficial thereafter as and when required.

AFTER TREATMENT.
We advise you to give your horse the next day off, ridden exercise can commence after that but for the next two days in straight lines - no tight circles, schooling, lunging or horse walker in order to gain maximum benefit from the treatment.
If the horse is not in hard work or in the middle of competition season, allowing three days off following treatment is even better.
Before you book a treatment for your horse please make sure that the Blacksmith, Dentist or saddler have either been before or a booked to come at least a week after the treatment has finished.

CONDITIONS THAT RESPOND WELL TO BOWEN.
Unlevelness, disunited gait or irregular action.
Dragging toe.
Stiffness on one rein.
Uneven muscle development.
Cold or sore back.
Sluggish lymphatic system and conditions associated with it e.g. Cellulitis.
Change in temperament, or deterioration in performance.
Injuries from getting cast, pulling back when tied up, slipping on roads, poorly fitted saddle and/or bridles and rugs.
Gravel (pus in the foot)
Wound healing.

PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE.
All horses will benefit from Bowen therapy. Your horse will have more elevation in his stride by freeing him up, more power from his hind quarters, more flexion in his neck, a softer outline and a much happier horse. 'Top up' treatments help prevent any soreness, tightness or niggles developing into problems.

Remember Bowen therapy is NOT a substitute for veterinary treatment/advice, so please if in doubt consult your vet first.
