Discovery ‼️
New organelle in a human cell

🚨 Scientists discover a brand-new organelle hiding inside human cells!

In a major leap for cell biology, researchers at the University of Virginia have uncovered a previously unknown organelle—the hemifusome.

Organelles are the tiny “organs” inside our cells that perform life-sustaining jobs, from energy production to protein packaging. The newly identified hemifusome acts as a microscopic recycling center, helping cells sort, reuse, or dispose of proteins—key to keeping them healthy and preventing toxic buildup.

What makes this discovery extraordinary is that it finally confirms a long-theorized process called “hemifusion,” where two vesicles (bubble-like transporters inside cells) partially merge, forming a shared two-layered structure.

The hemifusome is incredibly small—around 100 nanometers across—and was visualized using cryo-electron tomography, a cutting-edge imaging method that freezes and scans cells in 3D. This marks the first time hemifusion has been directly observed in living human cells, revealing a hidden layer of cellular organization.

Scientists believe this could transform how we understand neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, where cells fail to clear damaged or misfolded proteins. By decoding how hemifusomes function, researchers may one day learn how to restore the body’s natural cleanup systems.

How the Brain Uses Objects to Find Direction

Researchers have shown that the brain uses objects as anchors to reinforce our sense of direction.

In mice, cells in the postsubiculum became more active when facing an object, while cells tied to other directions were suppressed.

This sharpened the animal’s ability to know where it was in relation to its surroundings.

The discovery offers new clues into why conditions like Alzheimer’s often cause disorientation.

Missing out on sleep isn’t just making you tired, it could be making you sick. Research shows that sleep deprivation can lower antibody levels, slowing your body’s ability to fight off bacteria and viruses effectively.

When you don’t get enough rest, your immune system struggles to produce key cells and proteins needed to defend against infections. This makes you more susceptible to colds, flu, and other illnesses. Even short-term sleep loss can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines and delay recovery from sickness.

Prioritising quality sleep isn’t just about feeling refreshed, it’s essential for your body’s defence system. Adults generally need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to maintain optimal immune function, repair tissues, and support overall health.

Remember, sleep is one of the easiest and most powerful tools to protect your health. Skipping it could cost more than just energy, it could compromise your body’s frontline defence.

The human body has an incredible ability to regenerate. From your skin renewing itself every 28 days to the brain repairing itself over the course of years, each organ has its own timeline for regeneration. The heart, for example, regenerates about every 4.5 to 5 years, while muscle tissue takes 4-8 weeks to heal.

Understanding your body’s regenerative abilities can help you take better care of it. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or just trying to maintain your health, regular exercise and a nutrient-rich diet support these natural regeneration processes. Even your liver regenerates in just one year, showing just how resilient the body is when given the right tools.

Make sure you’re nourishing your organs with vitamins, hydration, and rest to help them regenerate effectively. Your body is capable of amazing things—help it achieve its full potential. 💪🌱

Neurons Burn Fat for Fuel: Discovery Could Reverse Brain Damage

Researchers have discovered that neurons can use fats—not just sugars—as a fuel source, overturning long-held beliefs about how the brain powers itself.

The study revealed that when energy demands rise, neurons recycle parts of themselves to create fats, a process driven by the DDHD2 protein.

In patients with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia 54, this mechanism fails, leading to severe neurodegeneration.

By supplementing fatty acids, scientists restored neuron function within 48 hours, offering new hope for treating neurodegenerative disorders.
