We just wrapped up another incredible Beef Cattle Reproductive Ultrasound Training Course in Alberta!

Even with one of our vet trainers sidelined by a last-minute illness, it was a full and productive two days — plenty of learning, lots of scanning, and more than a few tired arms by the end!

Participants had the unique opportunity to try out HerdIQ, the groundbreaking new AI platform built into the iBex NXT ultrasound systems. When we launched in 2012, we never imagined we'd be creating training programs for farmers. But then we started getting calls that changed everything…

In 2012, our business set out with a simple and focused goal: to bring Canadian veterinarians access to the best robust, portable ultrasound machines made in Europe and North America designed for veterinary use. At no point did we imagine we’d one day be building a national education program in reproductive ultrasound for dairy and beef producers. But over time, something changed and not because we were looking to disrupt or disrespect the veterinary profession. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Shortly after launching, we started getting quiet, almost whispered inquiries from dairy farmers: “Can a farmer buy one of these machines?” At first, we weren’t sure how to answer. Our business was built to serve veterinarians. But the calls kept coming from serious dairy producers both large and small looking for ways to better manage their herds by integrating timely, on-farm pregnancy detection into their reproduction strategies.

As demand grew, we realized this wasn’t a one-off request, it was a genuine growing need among progressive producers. That prompted us to read the provincial veterinary acts, consult with veterinarians at the Ministry of Agriculture, speak with provincial associations, and consult practicing veterinarians and veterinary professors at top Canadian universities. We knew that if we were going to respond to this demand, we needed to do it with integrity, within the rules, and with full transparency.

We learned that in Canada, producers are legally allowed to use ultrasound equipment on their own animals, provided they do not utilize it on animals they don’t own. In their own words, a dairy producer or the farms herdsman checking their own cows for pregnancy is not breaking the rules provided they understand their limits, act within them, and prioritize animal welfare and safety.
This sparked a new question: if producers are going to do this and clearly many are, why is no one helping them do it properly?

Let’s be honest. For years, ultrasound equipment suppliers in Canada have been selling directly to farmers. Done quietly. Without any follow-up, training, or support. Farmers would call us after buying a used machine from a vet, ordered a machine online, or bought one from an ultrasound supplier who simply shipped it out with no instructions or direction. Some would self-teach with YouTube videos. Others had supportive vets who helped them learn. Still others faced opposition, some even being told their vet would drop them if they pursued on-farm ultrasound

We felt a responsibility to do more than just get them the equipment. If farmers were going to invest in ultrasound machines and they were, it was our duty to make sure they had access to excellent training, understood how to use the equipment safely, correctly and ethically, and were aware of the boundaries around its use wherever they got their machine.

That is how are education program was born. Not out of a desire to replace veterinarians, but to compliment them. Our courses are led by respected and highly experienced Canadian veterinarians, including board-certified theriogenologists and instructors from leading veterinary universities. Every course includes review of the relevant information in the veterinary acts and reinforces the importance in working with a veterinarian, not around them.

We encourage farmers to bring their vet into the conversation. We stress that no piece of equipment can replace the broad and deep expertise of a veterinarian, nor should it attempt to. In fact, many of our best post training outcomes come when veterinarians and producers work as a team using ultrasound to catch pregnancies sooner, plan repro protocols more effectively, and reduce reproductive inefficiencies.

We recognize that not everyone sees it this way. A small but vocal number of veterinarians object to any involvement of producers in on-farm ultrasound. Some have chosen not to do business with us because of it, even while other suppliers continue to sell machines to farmers with no training and no transparency. That is their choice, but we believe farmers deserve better than a box arriving at their doorstep with no guidance. We believe they deserve education, support and the opportunity to make informed, responsible decisions for their herd.
