The Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York's annual conference in Albany is coming to an end. The conference was excellent, but the keynote by Dr. Jeremy Boal was truly extraordinary. We appreciate HPCANYS openness to bringing this topic to hospices around the state and their support in educating people about this option. Hospice utilization in NY is incredible low, and we hope that once medical aid in dying is signed into law, we will see more people utilize this very needed service (hospice utilization has increased in many, if not most) states that have legalized medical aid in dying.
Dr. Boal spoke eloquently about the bill and answered questions humbly and intellectually, from both his perspective as a doctor and a person living with a terminal illness. In the end, I hope everyone left with his words in their head: "Knowing that I have access to medical aid in dying has been the greatest gift I have received since my diagnosis... I can really live in the moment knowing that I have control."
