Published ten years apart, these interviews with Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) capture the reality of mental health, trauma, treatment, and healing for Gazans who face ongoing siege and assault.

“Genocidal harm might look like trauma, but the symptoms of trauma are not what we should be focusing on alone,” explains Dr. Abu Jamei. “We must face the scale and complexity of the violence inflicted on the individual, but also on the collective, on the land, on history, and on futures.”

Read the 2015 interview (https://doi.org/10.1525/jps.2016.45.2.120), and the 2025 essay (https://doi.org/10.1080/0377919X.2025.2481819) in the Journal of Palestine Studies.

There is enormous psychological toll on Gaza's children. We urgently need adequate models of care for this kind of intense, prolonged, and pervasive trauma.
