NextSense

NextSense NextSense is a not-for-profit that provides services for people with hearing or vision loss.

We work with both children, adults and their families to educate and create an individual program of care that meets their unique needs. We’re a registered NDIS provider, and we work with you to achieve your goals and potential. With the support of generous donations, NextSense provides vital support for children and adults, more cochlear implants than any other service in Australia, and is a world leader for research, technology and professional education in our field.

NextSense was proud to be well represented at the recent Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implants & Related Sciences (APSCI) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 🌏🎓

Our Institute Director Greg Leigh presented a paper he co-authored with Professorial Fellow Teresa Ching & @‌MacquarieUniProfessor of Linguistics, Linda Cupples 📄 The paper shared findings from a landmark study showing a strong positive link between the age an infant receives a cochlear implant & their later speech perception, psychosocial skills & overall quality of life.

Greg & Teresa were among a group of seven from NextSense who attended the symposium, alongside Trudy Smith, Inge Kaltenbrunn & three members of our surgeon network: Catherine Birman, Markus Dahm & Melville da Cruz 🤝

Art has been a running theme all term at NextSense School & our students got the chance to see it in action this week during a special excursion to Museum of Contemporary Art Australia 🎨

The group explored multimedia artwork which included film & sound. Students then participated in a workshop where they used a range of materials to create a sculpture of a fantasy animal & their home 🫶

Some of us also explored the city after to finish off an amazing day out!

We’re thrilled to share that Australian Chinese Charity Foundation Inc. 澳洲華人公益金 & Community Bank Lindfield are supporting our project, Harmonising Futures, an inclusive, evidence-based early intervention group program at NextSense Macquarie for children aged 1–6 with hearing or vision loss.

Through the simple joy of music, this program helps children build essential communication, listening, movement & social skills, while also strengthening the emotional connection between children & their families 🎵

Over the next year, at least 28 children will benefit, including around 20 who are deaf or hard of hearing & 8 who are blind or have low vision.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Australian Chinese Charity Foundation & Community Bank Lindfield for helping reduce barriers to participation, empower parents & foster a sense of inclusion & belonging for families who often face extra challenges.

Together, we’re creating brighter futures, one musical moment at a time 💛

Making a splash at school swimming lessons 💦🏊‍♀️

With sunny days & supportive instructors, everyone is building confidence in the water at our weekly swimming program. This has linked nicely with lessons on sun & water safety, why we need to protect our skin & the importance of Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek & Slide 🌞

NextSense recently welcomed six journalists from Indonesia who were in Australia to learn more about our research, innovation & community impact.

The group explored our Cochlear Implant program & the early intervention & support services we provide. They also met 18-month-old Kaia & her mum, Zara, who shared how NextSense is helping Kaia thrive.

NextSense Institute Director, Greg Leigh, outlined Australia’s Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program, which he helped pioneer, now reaching more than 97% of newborns & improving outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Thank you to Cochlear Australia and New Zealand & Australian Embassy - Jakarta, Indonesia for supporting the visit & touring our Centre of Innovation 💛
