Most therapists — and almost every smoker — are working with the wrong model. 👇
Smoking doesn’t relieve stress. Ni****ne is a stimulant that raises heart rate and blood pressure. Smokers report HIGHER baseline stress than non-smokers (50% vs 31%, Pew Research).
What smoking “relieves” is the withdrawal stress that smoking itself created. It’s a trap.
And here’s the part that changes everything: quitting improves mental health with effect sizes comparable to antidepressants (Taylor et al.).

Most of us were taught that weight loss is simple arithmetic: eat less, burn more.
What if that framing is exactly why so many people stay stuck?

In my latest blog post, I explore the science of food sequencing, research from Weill Cornell Medicine showing that eating the same foods in a different order produces measurably different blood glucose and insulin responses.
No new foods. No calorie deficit. Just order.

I also look at why the low-fat craze of the 1980s was later described by Harvard researchers as a "failed experiment," and what the evidence says about GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, including what happens to most people within ten months of stopping them.

This isn't about another diet. It's about understanding your body's hormonal logic and working with it, not against it.

Why “eat less and move more” isn’t enough

We’ve been told repeatedly that weight loss is simple math: calories in minus calories out.
Yet our bodies aren’t bomb calorimeters.
Food labels are based on incinerating food in a laboratory, while the calories we actually absorb depend on digestion and hormones.
Two people of the same age and weight can have resting energy needs that differ by as much as 600 kcal per day.

Moreover, when you cut calories, your body adapts: resting energy expenditure drops, non‑exercise movement decreases, and appetite increases.
And while exercise is essential for heart health and maintaining weight, research on hunter‑gatherer societies shows that total energy expenditure eventually plateaus; more exercise doesn’t linearly burn more calories.

The takeaway?
Calorie balance still matters, but it’s not a straightforward subtraction problem.
Focus on sustainable habits: nutrient‑dense meals, moderate activity, stress management, and view movement as part of a holistic approach rather than the sole tool for creating deficits.

Do you lose control over your mind and body in hypnosis, like someone who takes drugs?

No. And the difference matters.

A drug changes your nervous system through chemicals, which can reduce your ability to regulate what you feel and do. Hypnosis works the other way around. You don’t take anything. You relax, you let go of the constant rational analysis, and you move beyond automatic mental programs that usually run in the background.

In a good hypnotic state, you’re not unconscious. You’re focused inward, more aware, and often more in control than in everyday life. You can still hear what’s happening around you. If something truly important happened, you would respond immediately.
