Metastatic Mondays: an important update for HER2+ metastatic breast cancer 💜

There’s new FDA-approved treatment news that may change first-line care for some people living with HER2-positive metastatic (secondary, advanced) breast cancer 🙌

The combination of Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan) and pertuzumab is now FDA approved in the US as a first-line treatment for HER2+ breast cancer that is metastatic or can’t be operated on.

This approval is based on results from the phase III DESTINY-Breast09 trial 🔬

Compared with the current standard treatment (taxane + trastuzumab + pertuzumab):

🔹 The risk of cancer progression or death was reduced by 44%

🔹 People on Enhertu and pertuzumab went a median of 40.7 months without cancer progression, compared with 26.9 months on standard therapy

📣 Share this to help spread awareness and make sure more people know what questions they can ask their care team.

Stay tuned for our next post next week 💜

Let’s decode invasive breast cancer💜

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour📈 This becomes invasive when the cancer cells spread from the original site into nearby breast tissue🔁 The majority of tumours form in the milk ducts or milk producing glands (lobules)🥛

Invasive breast cancers that begin in the cells lining the milk ducts are referred to as invasive ductal carcinomas (IDC) and account for 80% of invasive breast cancer cases📊 Invasive breast cancers that begin in the lobules are referred to as invasive lobular carcinomas (ILC) and account for 10% of invasive breast cancer cases.

“If you are really feeling overwhelmed by talking to friends and family about the ins and outs of your diagnosis, it can help to sit with a friend or a partner and get them to feed back to others.

It’s hard when you are feeling so ill and know that everyone cares and wants to know you are going to be ok, but sometimes you just do not feel ok and the thought of having to put on a brave face is too much.”
