🐶 Why does your small dog take their food out of the bowl to eat?
Have you ever filled your dog’s bowl, only to watch them pick up a kibble, carry it away, and eat it somewhere else? Many small dogs do this — and it’s actually quite common!
Here are a few reasons why your pup might prefer eating next to the bowl rather than from it:
🥣 Instinct from their ancestors
Dogs are natural scavengers. In the wild, animals sometimes carry food away from the main source to eat it somewhere safer. Your little dog may simply be following this instinct.
🔊 The bowl might feel uncomfortable
Metal bowls can make noise when tags hit them, which can startle sensitive dogs. Some bowls also move around on the floor, making mealtime stressful.
🐾 Small dog, big bowl
If the bowl is too deep or wide, it can feel awkward for tiny dogs to reach their food. Taking the kibble out might just be easier for them.
👃 Better smell and exploration
Some dogs enjoy investigating their food on a flat surface where they can sniff it more easily.
✨ What you can try at home
* Use a shallow bowl or plate for small breeds
* Try a ceramic or non-slip bowl instead of metal
* Place the bowl on a rubber mat so it doesn’t move
* Feed in a quiet, low-traffic area where your dog feels safe
* Offer smaller portions so the bowl doesn’t feel overwhelming
⚠️ When should you speak to your vet?
It’s best to book a check-up if your dog:
* Suddenly changes their eating behaviour
* Seems painful when chewing
* Drops food frequently
* Has bad breath, drooling, or pawing at the mouth
* Is eating much less than usual
Sometimes eating outside the bowl can be linked to dental discomfort or oral pain, especially in small breeds.
