Back to school!

As our children head back to school this month, it is important that we remember to minimise the risk of injury to their backs.

From poorly fitted shoes, to overloaded backpacks, we need to consider all aspects for a happy, pain-free child to thrive. Here are CASA’s top tips for a safe spinal return to school:

- Lighten the load for your child by packing only essential items in their backpacks. Consider an additional smaller cooler bag for their lunch so that not everything is crammed into a backpack and placing further pressure on their young, developing spines.

- Encourage your child to take a break from electronics by playing outside for a few hours a day. The strain placed on their neck as a result of electronic devices may be a cause for neck pain and headaches. If devices are unavoidable, then encourage your child to sit with improved posture to reduce the chance of injury.

- If your child is experiencing any pain, then it is important to contact your CASA-registered chiropractor for a full evaluation and treatment plan: https://membership.chiropractic.co.za/Public/Index #/findAChiropractor

While the medical profession does not know the main cause of the most common type of scoliosis, there are certain risks to be considered such as age, gender and genetics.

Typically, idiopathic scoliosis appears in adolescence and is more commonly seen in female patients.

Less commonly, disease like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy may be the cause of scoliosis in some patients.

Please consult with your CASA-registered chiropractor to further assess your condition and to plan your treatment protocol for your scoliosis: https://membership.chiropractic.co.za/Public/Index #/findAChiropractor

A common cause for back injuries is poor lifting techniques in the workplace and home.

Sometimes lifting your child into your arms or moving a small box can send you into a frenzy of pain and discomfort for days after.

Here are some great tips to consider when you are lifting objects:

• Think about the lift before you do it. If you know the parcel is too heavy for one person, ask for help.
• Don’t bend at your back when lifting. Rather use your legs by fully flexing your knees and hips to assume your lifting position.
• Do not twist your body while lifting objects. Keep your body straight and use your feet to turn around if you need to change direction instead of twisting from your waist.

Speak to your CASA-registered chiropractor today about other great lifting techniques.
