Inner child wounds refer to an approach to healing childhood trauma that recognises that our behaviour as adults stems from our childhood. Inner child work looks to meeting our unmet needs through a reparenting process we do for ourselves.

This powerful and difficult work but life changing. If you are interested in doing this type of work reach out to us.

We can teach ourselves to self regulate. Focusing on our bodies, breathing and full awareness - we can calm and feel our emotional states.

Anxiety can look like needing to have control and order. When we feel overwhelmed or fearful inside it can be overpowering. Thus we may turn to external behaviours to keep the fear at bay.

How you have been raised affects how you interact with your world. Taking time to understand this, provides insight into who you are and how you can strengthen healthier patterns in your life.

What is your anxiety trying to communicate to you? Instead of trying to ignore it or push it away. Reflect on why the anxiety is there, what message it might be sending and what actions you may take in your life to help you find regulation.

Mental health symptoms of decline happen gradually over time. This is dangerous as most people are not aware that they are declining until they hit a mental/physical crisis or burnout. Being aware of these symptoms is the first step to stopping a decline. These symptoms are messages from your body to stop, to do something differently or to take rest.

Listening to our bodies isn’t easy. Most people have been raised to ignore their emotions and bodily messages. We are told to work harder and put others first. Understanding your patterns and working on creating new ones is how we build mental health.

Regulated breathing is a key component to controlling emotions, being mindful and consciously engaging with the world. Taking deep breaths, consciously every day will help you to feel calmer and more engaged.

Exercise - simply take a deep breath in (lifting your diaphragm) hold it for 4 counts and let it out for 4 counts. Do this until you feel calm and present.

Dealing with intrusive thoughts can be overwhelming. Often we are dealing with them incorrectly by trying to push them away or force our thoughts to be positive. Rather we need to accept the thought and make a conscious decision to change the thought.

If you are struggling with intrusive thoughts consulting with a mental health professional can be beneficial.

Feeling emotionally triggered often stems from reactive childhood patterns. You may find yourself intensely reacting and not understanding why.

Next time this occurs take a moment to consider what happened in the situation which may have made you feel vulnerable, anxious, rejected or judged.

Understanding your triggers helps you to control your emotions and make patterns conscious.

Seeing a mental health professional is a useful tool for self understanding.

Burnout can creep up on us. It may begin with a desire to prove ourselves and before we know it, life has become about work, we aren’t looking after ourselves and our bodies take a toll.

Looking out for signs before we reach the end stages and making changes is how we can prevent burnout. It can be helpful to understand why you are pushing so hard. This may be related to an unconscious need or pattern. Speaking to a therapist can help you understand your drives better.

Anxiety may be worsened by a variety of lifestyle factors. It is important to be mindful of our physical health as well as emotional health when dealing with concerns like anxiety. Our body and minds are connected. We need to nurture our bodies through the food we eat and the rest we give it. Self love also comes from holding boundaries and understanding what is making us feel more anxious and why.

Take a moment to consider how these factors may be affecting your anxiety. Making small lifestyle changes can have a major influence on stress and anxiety.

Stone Walling is a term used to describe a relationship style where one or both partners denies healthy conflict resolution by ignoring or dismissing the other. This type of communication style may stem from a childhood where conflict was never discussed or where the person was ignored when they did something ‘wrong’ or whey they had a need.

Stone walling is a unhealthy conflict style in a relationship as it breaks down communication causing both people to feel alone and resentful.

Couples can work through unhealthy conflict styles in therapy by understanding why they use a specific style and how to communicate more effectively.
