According to the World Health Organisation, between 2000 and 2019, there as been a 3% increase in diabetes mortality rates by age. In 2019 Diabetes and kidney disease due to diabetes caused an estimate of 2 million deaths.

The main cause of diabetes varies by type.

Type 1 diabetes
- The deficient of insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes:
The body’s ineffective use of insulin ( this type of diabetes is mainly as a result of excess body weight or lack of physical activity)

Gestational diabetes:
Occurs during pregnancy & at risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.

No matter the type of diabetes you have it can lead to serious health problems as overtime diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.

Lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes through regular exercise- doing at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate intensity activity, achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Last week Sunday we hit our longest run 🏃🏽‍♀️ 38km
This Sunday we did 18km known as a taper run.

Why is tapering so important before race day?? 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

Tapering means significantly reducing the distance and intensity you run in the final 2/3 weeks of training up until race day (cutting your weekly mileage volume by 20 to 30% each week from your highest volume).

Benefits include:
1) Winding down and letting your body re-energies before the endurance of the marathon itself.
2) Allowing the body to repair wear & tear of muscle damage, making you stronger
3) To help avoid exhaustion
4) Your muscles will be depleted of carbohydrates
5) You won’t see any benefits from further training.

Tapering is a crucial part of the training process and should not be overlooked.

Regular exercise plays a vital role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
The America College of Sports Medicine and the Centres for Disease control and prevention recommends that an osteoporotic individual should take part in 150 mins of moderate intensity aerobic exercise per week, 75 mins of vigorous aerobic activity or a combination of both for adults.
It is further advised that strength training is done twice a week.

❗️❗️Awareness Week❗️❗️

If you have answered no then you are one of the lucky ones as 8/10 people are affected by lower back pain.

Those of you who have had back pain may have experienced it in various forms such as:

Risk factors:
- Prolonged sitting or lying down
-Improper lifting
-Poor posture
-Age
-Smoking

If you would like to know more about lower back pain and how a Biokineticist can assist.
