⚠️ HEAT ALERT: PLEASE READ ☀️

The SA Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for parts of the Western & Northern Cape.

Temperatures are expected to hit 30–40°C — and that’s not just “a bit hot”, that’s strain-on-the-body hot.

A few non-negotiables for the next few days:
💧 Hydrate properly
Sip water regularly — don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
If you’re sweating a lot, add electrolytes.
🧴 Protect your skin
Use high-SPF sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours (more if swimming or sweating).
👕 Dress for sun safety, not fashion
Loose, light-coloured clothing, hats, sunglasses.
Your future self will approve.

🕒 Avoid peak heat
Limit outdoor activity between 10:00–16:00.
Shade breaks are not optional.
🚨 Know the warning signs
Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness or confusion = act fast and seek medical help.
This kind of heat catches people off guard.
Please take it seriously — and look out for kids, the elderly, and anyone exercising outdoors.

• “I don’t know the name… but the box was blue.”

• “I googled it… now I’m scared.”

Wat om te doen (en wat om nie te doen nie)

HOEKOM SONBRAND RÉGTIG GEBEUR

• Sonbrand is UV-skade – die strale beskadig die buitenste laag van jou vel.
• Jou liggaam reageer met inflammasie.
• Daarom word die vel warm, rooi en seer, en kan dit later begin skilfer.
• Die vel kan selfs ure ná sonblootstelling aanhou “brand”, omdat die skade nog besig is om te ontwikkel.

WAT OM WÉL TE DOEN

Koel die vel af: plaas lou, koel lappies op die gebrande area
Hidreer: drink ekstra water + elektroliete
Streel die vel: aloe, panthenol, ná-son gel
Verminder inflammasie: ibuprofen (indien veilig om te gebruik)
Bevog gereeld: dun, ligte lae is die beste

WAT OM TE VERMY

• Moenie petroleumjellie gebruik nie — dit hou hitte vas in die vel
• Moenie blase oopmaak nie
• Moenie vel afskraap of trek nie

In summer, especially with physical activity, you can become significantly dehydrated in as little as 30 minutes, and potentially lose one to two litres of water per hour. Between heat, sun, and holiday rushing, staying hydrated isn’t optional — it’s essential.

Top tip: Add an oral rehydration solution/electrolytes to your water when you’re outdoors or sweating more than usual.
