Do your hand/s become painful when you are gardening or cooking a meal for your friends and family?
Do your hand/s go numb or do you have pins and needles in your hand/s?
We can develop many different hand conditions when we overuse our hands. To name the few common conditions: De Quevains, trigger finger, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
The most common condition that can occur is carpal tunnel syndrome.
This is when one of the nerves in the forearm running into your hand becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist. This can cause numbness, weakness, swelling, and pain in your hand or wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects 4-5% of people worldwide. Women are three times more likely than men to develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Some of the common causes are when you have an injury to the wrist causing swelling, Rheumatoid arthritis, fluid retention during menopause, diabetes, repeated use of vibrating tools, and sleeping on your wrist. Some hobbies and occupations can cause this as well, such as cleaning, sewing, packing food, and repetitive activities requiring a tight grip.
Physiotherapy may help you to relieve the symptoms of pain, improve your muscle strength, and help to reduce the swelling in your hand. This can help to improve your functionality.
