Children grow and develop at their own pace, and that’s completely normal. It can feel worrying when you notice early signs of speech or language difficulties, but the first step is understanding what typical development looks like.

In the first year of life, babies begin communicating through simple gestures such as pointing, waving, and nodding. By around 18 months, most children start building their vocabulary with 10 to 20 words. They often use babbling and simple one or two word phrases like “mama” and “dada.” You will also hear early consonant sounds like m, b, and d as they explore speech. At this age, many children can follow simple one step instructions and enjoy imitating words and sounds.

By two years old, children usually understand and follow basic verbal requests and begin using more meaningful words to express themselves.

It is important to remember that every child develops differently. Milestones are a helpful guide, not a rigid checklist. Some children simply need more time. Others may show signs of a delay that could benefit from professional support.

We recently presented to school staff about childhood apraxia of speech, and one of the biggest takeaways was this: apraxia doesn’t only affect how a child speaks. It can influence multiple areas of their school experience.

Many learners with apraxia work incredibly hard to communicate, and that effort can spill over into:

🔹 Behaviour and frustration tolerance
🔹 Difficulty with on-demand speech during class activities
🔹 Challenges with testing or oral assessments
🔹 Social understanding, confidence, and peer interactions
🔹 Co-occurring conditions that impact learning
🔹 Hidden symptoms like anxiety, word-finding difficulties, and emotional fatigue

For teachers, this knowledge is powerful. It helps us shift from “Why is this child struggling?” to “How can we support this child better?”

When we understand the full picture, we create classrooms that feel safer, calmer, and more inclusive for every learner, especially those who communicate differently. 💛
