Sensory Matters OT

Sensory Matters OT Sensory Matters Is a paediatric occupational therapy practice in Bedfordview, Edenvale and Benoni.

Sensory Matters Occupational Therapists was started in 2008 by Jacklynn Langkilde and Jacqui Jorge. We have since established a practice in Bedfordview at Therapyworx and in Benoni and have a team of 6 full time therapists and 3 locum therapists. Our team is comprised of dynamic, dedicated and passionate occupational therapists. We have a special interest in treating fussy babies, infants and children with developmental delay, autism, learning difficulties, ADHD, behavioural challenges and sensory processing difficulties. In addition to this we host journal club groups for other occupational therapists in our area, mentor and train students and offer workshops to OT's, teachers and parents. Our own therapists are all either Sensory Integration trained or in the process of obtaining their SI training. This together with other short courses and training opportunities help to keep our intervention relevant and up to date to offer comprehensive service to our clients and their families.

Spatial awareness is the distance between you and the objects in your environment. As babies crawl and walk, they begin to learn more about their environment and the space they explore.

Kids who have not developed spatial awareness may have a hard time following directions or copying words from the board onto paper. They may have trouble with the space between themselves and the board and then again when they try write letters on the page. It may also cause them to not understand the difference between letters like "b" and "d" or "m and "n".

Many parents tell us their child have difficulty socialising or building relationships with their friends at school because they don't understand boundaries. They are unsure how close or far to stand from them especially in a crowd of people and often bumps into others or can't figure out how much room they need to get around them.

Some of these things are normal for your child's age but if your child does not show improvement as they get older it may be a sign they have difficulty with the space in their environment.

So what can we do at home to help? These are just a few activities for you to try as your kids get older.

Why is w-sitting worth re-considering?

👉it limits core strength and balance
👉it increases pressure on hips and knees
👉it can make transitions to other movements (like crawling, reaching, standing) harder

What you can try instead:
👍encourage "criss-cross" or long-sit positions
👍use props like wedges or pillows to give support while kids build strength
👍make sitting practice playful: mats, games that require balance, reaching etc.

Do you know that in addition to the five senses people normally discuss - hearing, seeing, touching, tasting and smelling - we have three "hidden" senses?

1. The tactile sense which provides information mainly through the surface of our skin about the texture, shape and size of objects in the environment, tells us whether we are actively touching something or are passively being touched. It helps us distinguish between threatening and non-threatening touch sensations.
2. The vestibular sense provides information through the inner ear about gravity and space, about balance and movement and about our head and body position in relation to the surface of the earth.
3. The proprioceptive sense provides information through our joints, muscles and ligaments about where our body parts are and what they are doing.

Have you ever wondered why crossing the midline is so important for a child's development?

🧠crossing the midline plays a crucial role in a child's physical, cognitive and emotional development.
🧠when children learn to reach across their body (e.g. using their left hand to touch their right shoulder), they are strengthening vital connections in the brain that support co-ordination, focus and even reading and writing ✍️📚
🧠crossing the midline helps with:
✅bilateral integration
✅hand-eye co-ordination
✅problem-solving and motor planning
✅attention and focus

As OT's it's important to understand the difference between a tantrum and a sensory meltdown. One is a struggle for control while the other is a total nervous system overload that requires a calm, safe space.
