In 1988, the Hospice East Rand moved from Ampthill Avenue to a larger home at 218 Kemston Avenue in Westdene. The move reflected a growing need for care, as more patients and families began relying on hospice support. The new premises created space to expand services beyond home visits. Plans included dedicated areas for volunteer training, therapy support, and a day care centre where patients could receive care, companionship, and support.
At the time, hospice was already caring for around 26 terminally ill patients and their families each month. Services were provided free of charge, sustained by donations and community fundraising.
The move to Kemston Avenue marked an important step in the organisation’s growth, strengthening its ability to support more people across the East Rand while remaining rooted in community-based care.
