Sleep disorders & how is it related to menopause?

Quick Fact:
If you’ve struggled with sleep problems before, they can often worsen during postmenopause.

What are Sleep Disorders?
They’re conditions that disrupt normal sleep patterns, leading to insomnia, snoring, or even sleep apnea. Many women in postmenopause report:
Waking up frequently
Tossing and turning all night
Struggling to fall asleep

Why Does This Happen?
• Psychological factors: stress, overwork, or emotional strain.
• Physical factors: hormonal changes, especially declining estrogen, which reduces serotonin and melatonin (your body’s sleep hormone).

What Can Help?
• Keep your bedroom cool and ventilated
• Wear loose, breathable clothing
• Stick to a consistent bedtime
• Avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bed
• Exercise (but not right before sleep)
• Skip daytime naps

Maintaining healthy hormone levels alongside lifestyle changes is key to managing sleep disorders after menopause.

Can Your Thyroid Cause Sleep Apnea?

When your thyroid doesn’t make enough thyroxine (hypothyroidism), it can cause:
• Swelling in the thyroid
• Weight gain
• Weakened breathing muscles

All of these can increase your risk of sleep apnea.

If you have thyroid issues and struggle with poor sleep, a sleep apnea test could make all the difference.

Sleep + Alcohol: What You Need to Know
Sure, that glass of wine might make you feel drowsy… but did you know it can actually disrupt your sleep?

Alcohol often leads to fragmented, lower-quality rest
It slows the central nervous system and can worsen breathing in people with sleep apnea
Untreated sleep apnea + alcohol = increased health risks

For better, healthier sleep, skip the nightcap.

The link between tonsils and sleep apnea.

It’s not always about weight or age… sometimes it’s your tonsils. 👀
Enlarged tonsils can block your airway → cause snoring → and trigger sleep apnea.

The fix? In some cases, removing them opens the airway and helps you breathe easier.

Neck Size & Sleep Apnea
What’s the Connection?

Did you know your neck size can be a risk factor for sleep apnea?
Men with a neck size 17 inches+
Women with a neck size 16 inches+

Why does it matter?
A thicker neck can mean a narrower airway, making it harder for air to pass through.
Extra fat deposits around the airway may cause snoring, wheezing, or blocked breathing during sleep.

If you’ve noticed snoring, pauses in breathing, or constant fatigue – it might be time to get checked for sleep apnea.

How Your Face Shape Can Affect Your Breathing

Did you know certain facial features can increase your risk for sleep apnea?
Here are two key ones:

Recessed Chin (Retrognathia)
When the lower jaw sits further back, it can narrow your airway — making it easier for it to collapse during sleep.

Narrow or Recessed Upper Jaw (Maxilla)
An underdeveloped upper jaw can shrink your nasal cavity, forcing mouth breathing and reducing airflow.

Both can impact how well you breathe at night, and your overall sleep quality.
If you suspect this might be affecting you, it’s worth getting checked.

Is Sleep Apnoea in Your DNA? Let’s Breakdown the Truth!

Genetics can definitely play a role in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Studies show that family history matters—if relatives have OSA, your risk goes up. Traits like upper airway muscle tone, jaw structure, and even related conditions like hypertension or diabetes can all have genetic ties. On the flip side, central sleep apnoea (CSA) doesn’t seem to be inherited the same way.

But here’s the game-changer: even with a genetic predisposition, OSA can be managed. Lifestyle tweaks, medical treatments, and expert guidance could help you breathe easier—even if it’s in your genes.
