FYI
🦠RSV is the most common causes of bronchiolitis
🦠RSV occurs predominantly in children below the age of 2years
🦠RSV is highly contagious
🦠RSV causes cold-like symptoms that can lead to breathing difficulties and hospital admission
🦠RSV is usually seasonal, peaking in autumn and winter
🦠RSV is transmitted from person to person through physical contact, coughing, and sneezing
🦠Risk of transmission is increased with smoke exposure, crowded conditions, daycare and infected siblings
🦠Adults and older children generally have mild flu-like symptoms
🦠Symptoms are usually mild fever, runny nose, blocked nose, sore throat, mild cough
🦠Most children and adults recover within a few days
🦠In some children disease can progress to breathing difficulties, wheezing and poor feeding
‼️Danger signs include persistent fever, dehydration and respiratory distress ie rappid breathing, chest indrawing and grunting
💉 Most children can be treated at home with symptomatic treatment like saline nasal spray, parcetamol and preventing dehydration
💉As this is a viral infection, antibiotics in not necessary
💉Most children will recover in 1-2 weeks but can spread the virus for 1-3 weeks, even after recovery
😷Medical attention should be seeked in children under 3months, signs of distress, poor feeding and persistant fever
😷Preventative measures include, hand and cough hygiene, prevention of smoke and overcrowded conditions
