A FIRST FOR CENTRAL SOUTH AFRICA!
Exclusively available at Emoyamed Bloemfontein with Dr Vivian Simmons – Specialist Surgeon Now Introducing: Oesophageal Manometry
We’re proud to announce that Dr Vivian Simmons is the first and only medical professional in Central South Africa to offer Oesophageal Manometry — an advanced diagnostic test that evaluates the strength and function of the oesophageal muscles.
This groundbreaking service is now available exclusively at Dr Simmons’ consulting rooms at Emoyamed Bloemfontein, placing the region at the forefront of modern gastrointestinal diagnostics.
What is Oesophageal Manometry?
This test measures the coordination and pressure of the muscles in your oesophagus — the muscular tube that moves food and liquids from your throat to your stomach. It is used to investigate troubling and often confusing symptoms, including:
Chronic heartburn and acid reflux (GERD)
Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) Food or liquids getting “stuck”
Unexplained chest pain not related to the heart Oesophageal spasms or motility disorders like achalasia
Oesophageal Manometry offers clarity and precision in diagnosing issues that are often misinterpreted or left untreated — allowing for tailored, effective treatment plans.
Why Choose Dr Vivian Simmons?
With years of surgical experience and a passion for advancing care in the region, Dr Simmons brings this first-of-its-kind diagnostic tool to Emoyamed Bloemfontein. This means no more long-distance travel or unnecessary guesswork for patients in the Free State and surrounding areas.
By offering Oesophageal Manometry, Dr Simmons continues to raise the standard of specialist care available locally — with a focus on early diagnosis, patient comfort, and accurate results.
What to Expect from the Test:
• Takes approximately 45 minutes
• Minimally invasive and performed without sedation
• Inserted through the nostril with a numbing agent
• You’ll be asked to swallow water during the test to measure pressures
• Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure
Important Patient Preparation:
• No food or drink after midnight before your test
• Continue essential medications with a sip of water (e.g., for high blood pressure)
• Avoid certain medications like painkillers, sedatives, and motility agents — detailed instructions will be provided by the team
