🔹 1 in 9 people will have diabetes by 2030 - that is less than 8 years away!!

🔹Over 700 MILLION people worldwide are expected to be living with diabetes in 2045.

🔹 Half of all people with diabetes are undiagnosed.

🔹 3 in 4 people with diabetes live in low and middle-income countries (like South Africa).

🔹 1 in 2 people who need insulin cannot access or afford it.

🔹 Most South African medical aids are not fully (or even partially) funding blood glucose sensor technology needed to help manage diabetes.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 🗣️

I am no expert in this area, but like SO MANY others, I have dealt with my fair share of mental illness. And it’s time to talk about it.

Social media is filled with , but I wanted to share my favourites too. That being said, I also know that it’s so much easier said than done. If your daily self care habits don’t seem to be enough, don’t be afraid to speak to a mental health professional. There is no shame in seeking professional help!

TIME FOR A NEW ADVENTURE 👋🏻

This is a bittersweet announcement to make… I have accepted a job offer in Bloemfontein and will be starting there next week. This, unfortunately, means I will no longer be practicing in Potchefstroom.

I will, however, continue…
🍓To offer virtual consultations (after hours & weekends).
🍓To offer health talks and presentations, as well as group sessions.
🍓To post and share nutrition tips, healthy recipes and videos on my social media platforms.
🍓With my nutrition-related volunteer projects.
🍓Working with Wapad - there are still many more interesting monthly sessions to come!

As much as I would love to continue to run my practice on a full-time basis, life happens and plans change. Youth unemployment is a big problem in our country (and for our country’s dietitians), so I am grateful for the opportunity to gain more experience and build new skills.

Thank you Potch! You have been SO good to me. Goodbye for now. ❤️

HIGH FIBRE YOGURT SCONES 🍓

With coming up this weekend, spoil your mom with these yummy scones that are high in fibre! My mom loved it, so I’m sure yours will too. 😉

INGREDIENTS: (For 8 medium-sized scones)
1/2 cup oats
1.5 cups cake flour
2 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup castor sugar OR 2 tablespoons artificial sweetener
1/4 cup baking margarine (cold)
1 egg (whisked)
1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1 tsp vanilla essence

METHOD:
1. Preheat oven to 170°C.

2. Place oats, flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl.

3. Add the margarine to the dry ingredients. Use your (clean!) hands to rub it in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

4. Combine the egg, yogurt and vanilla essence in a separate bowl.

5. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and gently mix until just combined and a dough has formed.

6. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to the thickness of about 1.5cm. Use a medium-sized cookie/scone cutter to cut scones out of the dough. Make sure not to waste any precious dough!

7. Place on a baking paper-lined tray and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until an inserted skewer comes out clean.

8. Let the scones cool slightly and serve with topping of choice.

*OPTIONAL:
• Add 1 cup sliced strawberries just before rolling out the dough for extra moisture, taste and healthy goodness! 🍓
• Double the ingredients if you’re expecting your entire family for brunch, or freeze the extra scones to use again later.

EARTH DAY & FOOD WASTE 🌍🏠

As a dietitian, I believe it is my duty to promote SUSTAINABLE eating along with healthy eating. It plays such a huge role in saving our planet and protecting food security here in . 🇿🇦

In SA, 10 MILLION TONNES of food go to waste every year. That’s a third of the 31 million tonnes produced annually in the country. Of this, fruits, vegetables and cereals account for 70% of the wastage and loss primarily throughout the food supply chain – from farm to fork.

Some scary stats:
👉🏻 The energy wasted every year in SA for producing food that is not eaten is estimated as enough to power Johannesburg for roughly 16 WEEKS!

👉🏻 About 90% of waste in SA is disposed of to landfills, where the food-waste component leads to the production of methane gas and carbon dioxide. These are that cause climate change.
