UNIVERSITAS ACADEMIC HOSPITAL CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
Bloemfontein, 12 September 2025 – Universitas Academic Hospital is proud to announce the successful completion of a life-saving kidney transplant on 2 September 2025.
The recipient, Mr Khotso Clayton Montse (31) from Kimberley, received the gift of life from his sister, Mrs Lieketseng Prudence Nombula (43), in an extraordinary act of love and selflessness. The transplant procedure was successfully performed by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team composed of vascular surgeons, urologists, and nephrologists.
The team was led by Prof Feziwe Bisiwe, a respected nephrologist and Head of the Nephrology Department at Universitas Academic Hospital.
Following surgery, Mrs Nombula was discharged and is recovering well at home.
On Wednesday, 10 September 2025, Mr Montse was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the ward for further monitoring and recovery. Both the donor and recipient are reported to be doing well.
This achievement marks another milestone for Universitas Academic Hospital. In October 2023, the hospital also celebrated a successful transplant when Mrs Judith Mvalo donated a kidney to her husband, Mr Thabo Mvalo. The loving couple are living their lives to the fullest and attend many health promotion events to raise awareness on healthy lifestyles.
Dr Balekile Mzangwa, CEO of Universitas Academic Hospital, said: "This transplant is a reminder of the power of compassion and modern medicine working hand in hand. We are deeply grateful to Mrs Nombula for her courage and generosity, and we commend our dedicated medical team for their exceptional skill and commitment.”
"At Universitas Academic Hospital, we remain steadfast in our mission to restore hope and transform lives through advanced healthcare," Dr Mzangwa concluded.
The hospital continues to champion organ donation awareness and encourages families to consider registering as donors to help address the urgent need for transplants in South Africa.
