MEN ENCOURAGED TO SEEK HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT

The University of the Free State (UFS) contributed to a broader understanding of men’s health and helped create a supportive and inclusive society that fosters the well-being for all individuals.

The UFS did this by successfully hosting its second Mask Unity Men’s Conference and putting the spotlight on men’s health by addressing health issues affecting men in higher education institutions.

The theme of the conference was “Remove your mask, and speak out!”, with men from different universities attending. It was hosted a few weeks ago over two days on the UFS Bloemfontein Campus.

The keynote speaker on the first day was Dr (Professor) Ramneek Ahluwalia, Chief Executive Officer of Higher Health SA.

According to Shibashiba Moabelo, Institutional HIV/AIDS Programme Coordinator at Kovsie Health, the conference noted that men often face unique challenges when it comes to emotional, psychological, and physiological health due to various contributing societal and cultural factors.

He says these challenges can arise from traditional gender norms and expectations, as well as the reluctance to seek help or express emotions openly.

“Normalizing and addressing these issues and creating awareness is crucial for promoting mental health and well-being among men.”

The conference focused on areas such as raising awareness, encouraging help-seeking behaviour, challenging gender stereotypes, building support networks, mental health education and collaboration and advocacy.

And by addressing these, it contributed to a better understanding and support of men’s health.

Help-seeking behaviour was for instance encouraged by providing information on available resources, therapy options, and support networks. The conference encouraged men to seek help when they need it.

“Sharing personal stories of men who have overcome mental health challenges also inspired others to act positively,” says Moabelo.

When it comes to mental health education, the conference provided a session on mental health literacy, stress management techniques, and emotional intelligence to give men practical skills to manage their mental well-being.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: EARLY DETECTION CAN HELP SAVE LIVES

“Awareness saves lives through early detection.”

That is why it is important to dedicate a month to getting the right information out about breast cancer, says Sister Corné Vorster, professional nurse at Kovsie Health.

According to her, it is one of the most treatable cancers and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed in October, is imperative to help prevent it.

Although it predominantly affects woman, it can also affect men.

“Breast cancer can be prevented to a very large extent with early detection by means of self-examinations, mammograms, and other tests.”

Vorster says awareness of it means that more people will gain access to proper information and testing, and fewer people will die from the disease.

And it can also lead to people making healthier lifestyle choices.

Kovsie Health would like to congratulate Gerald Coetzee on being crowned Sportsman of the Year at the Free State Sport Stars last night.

The former Knights cricket player was honoured at the glamorous dinner, presented by Central24 and the University of the Free State, as the top sportsman in the province for 2023.

Kovsie Health also celebrates and applauds all the UFS winners.

Robert Summers (badminton) and Refiloe Nketsa (netball) were respectively named KovsieSport Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

Michael Annies (rugby) was crowned UFS Junior Sportsman and Johani van Tonder (triple jumper) Junior Sportswoman of the Year.

Coetzee is currently part of the South African men’s team at the ICC One Day Cricket World Cup.

The young fast bowler played in his country’s first World Cup game in India and claimed three wickets, the most in his team, to help the Proteas beat Sri Lanka with 102 runs.

He has been a patient of the Sports and Exercise Medicine Clinic at Kovsie Health over the years.

Coetzee was honoured at the Free State Sport Stars for his achievements from 1 October 2022 – 30 September 2023.

UFS PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON MEN’S HEALTH AT CONFERENCE

The University of the Free State (UFS) is once again taking the lead by hosting its second Mask Unity Men’s Conference over the next two days.

The conference on the UFS Bloemfontein Campus will address health issues affecting men in higher education institutions. Some of the topics include effective communication, gender-based violence and positive masculinity.

The aim of the event is to create awareness among students on related issues, which will encourage positive development while advocating for behaviour modification through dialogue, education, and positive reinforcement.

The theme of the conference, hosted on 4 and 5 October 2023, is: “Remove your mask, and speak out!”. Men from different UFS, Central University of Technology and Sol Plaatje University campuses are among the attendees.

The conference follows after the success of the first version in 2022. Last year men were encouraged to take off their masks and be open about their internal battles in order to receive tools they need to navigate their way out of their situations, instead of bottling it up.

The keynote speaker today will be Dr (Professor) Ramneek Ahluwalia, Chief Executive Officer of Higher Health SA.

In 2023 the following conference topics will be discussed:

• Gender-based violence challenges facing men and young boys
• Why positive masculinities
• Sexual reproductive health rights
• Men and effective communication
• Substance abuse
• Mental health

❤️ WORLD HEART DAY: WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? ❤️

Heart disease is responsible for 18% of all deaths in South Africa and approximately 120 people suffer from a heart attack daily.

And cardiovascular disease (CVD – which includes heart disease and stroke) is the leading cause of death in the country after HIV/AIDS.

These statistics show exactly why it is important to raise awareness about heart disease and to do so annually.

World Heart Day is observed on 29 September, with September also being Heart Awareness Month.

The latter is celebrated each year in South Africa to raise awareness about heart disease and its risk factors and also the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to prevent disease onset.

The importance of the correct treatment for those who have cardiac related medical conditions, is also highlighted.

❤️ The aim of the campaign is the following: ❤️
1. Reinforcing the knowledge and awareness of heart disease and other circulatory diseases.

2. Influencing the behavioural uptake of a healthy lifestyle and reducing risk for cardiovascular disease onset.

3. Promoting the detection, prevention, treatment and care over a 4 – 5 week period with the main events occurring in September and on World Heart Day.

4. Reduce preventable heart disease by discouraging smoking, reducing salt intake, eating well, moving more, and getting your health risk assessment – www.heartfoundation.co.za

❤️ Kovsie Health also observes World Heart Day and Heart Awareness Month. The UFS community – from students, staff and others – can do a health risk assessment at Kovsie Health on UFS campuses. ❤️

KOVSIE HEALTH ASSISTS SHIMLAS WITH PRE-SEASON SCREENING

As the Shimlas gear up for the 2024 Varsity Cup, Kovsie Health has once again been assisting the UFS rugby players with baseline tests and screening.

These tests are usually done during pre-season for medical staff to have a better understanding of each player’s strengths and weaknesses. This helps to manage them in training and during the season.

The Sports and Exercise Medicine Clinic at Kovsie Health has been helping UFS rugby stars with this the last couple of weeks to make sure the Shimlas perform at their best.

Edith Maritz, physiotherapist at Kovsie Health, and UFS fourth year physiotherapy students put them through their paces.

Screenings are done to have a baseline for each player and a reference to go back to when injuries do occur. Things like wrist extent, strength of certain muscles, ankle extent, core strength, hamstrings, groins and calves are tested.

Dr Gerhard Jansen, medical practitioner at Kovsie Health, also does baseline concussion tests with the players. This is to know what their baseline was before they get concussed.

“When players for instance start complaining that their hamstrings or groins are getting tired during the season, we have a reference to work from and do these tests again.

“We can then show that the specific player’s performance has dropped in a certain area and he might be at a higher risk of getting injured,” says Maritz.

“We also do a questionnaire with the players about previous and current injuries.

“Or things they struggle with in order to help them before the season start. And maybe also to manage them during the pre-season and make the injury risks less.”

CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: TAKE PRECAUTION BY SCREENING AND NATIONAL POLICY

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in South Africa, and it is often fatal due to late diagnosis and limited access to treatment.

It is caused by persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world.

A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a screening tool that can detect cervical cancer and its precursors. The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is observed in September in South Africa with the aim of encouraging women to go for screening to prevent it.

A Pap smear can be done in your GP’s office and only takes a few minutes.

It is not painful, but you will probably feel a bit of discomfort. You should not be on your period when this test is being done. A Pap smear can however not detect any other sexually transmitted infections.

🩺 The national Department of Health has developed a cervical cancer prevention and control policy that aims to reduce mortality and morbidity from cervical cancer and to decrease the number of patients suffering from cervical cancer.

🩺 The policy recommends the following Pap smear protocol for women in South Africa:

1. Cervical screening should commence at 25 years of age.
2. Women should have three free cervical cancer screening tests at ten year intervals in the public health sector.
3. Women over the age of 50 should get a pap smear every five years.
4. Women living with HIV should get a pap smear every three years, regardless of their age or CD4 count.
5. Women who have had a hysterectomy should get a pap smear every five years if they have a history of cervical abnormalities or HPV infection, or if they are HIV positive.
6. Women who have had a total hysterectomy with removal of the cervix do not need to get a pap smear, unless they have a history of cervical cancer or its precursors.
7. Women with symptoms (such as pain or bleeding) can have a cervical test at any age.
8. Women who have an abnormal pap smear result should be referred for colposcopy and biopsy, and treated according to the national guidelines.
9. Women who have been vaccinated against HPV should still follow the pap smear protocol, as the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer.

🩺 Abnormal results will be managed according to the severity of the results and can be anything from doing a follow-up smear or sometimes referral to a gynaecologist. – Kovsie Health, https://my.clevelandclinic.org/

Kovsie Health staff took a well-earned break from serving the UFS community on Friday and celebrated Casual Day with others around the country.

The personnel contributed to the cause by buying their Casual Day stickers in support of persons with disabilities and to raise awareness.

They swopped their medical attire for more casual gear and also welcomed spring (1 September 2023) while relaxing and having lunch together as a team.

They were encouraged to wear bright colours and a big smile all day long. The theme for Casual Day in 2023 was Sharing a Smile and welcoming others to do the same.

Casual Day is a widely celebrated national campaign that occurs annually and is South Africa’s favourite fundraising and advocacy campaign for persons with disabilities.

It is the flagship project of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities.

BEAT STRESS IN YOUR LIFE THIS WAY

Stress causes your body to release hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can harm your heart over time.

Long-term stress can increase your risk of heart disease.

The month of September is Heart Awareness Month, to raise awareness about heart disease and its risk factors in South Africa.

About 80% of heart disease and strokes can be prevented.

• See the ER24 infographic on the effects of chronic stress and how you can beat it every day.

KOVSIE HEALTH STAFF SPOILED AT UFS WOMEN’S DAY BREAKFAST

Staff members of Kovsie Health were among those spoiled at the annual UFS Women’s Day Breakfast.

Women of the Kovsie community attended the event, hosted in the Callie Human Centre on the UFS Bloemfontein Campus, yesterday.

The Kovsie Health personnel enjoyed the breakfast, which also tied into the university’s 2023 Women’s Month campaign ( Strive to BeBetter).

The breakfast’s theme was Be Better Airlines, with the women treated as if they were passengers on an aeroplane named Flight 2034.

The Strive to BeBetter campaign reflects the institution’s dedication to fostering women’s empowerment and promoting gender equality within its academic and support staff domains.
