CRPM had the privilege of hosting a hands-on medical training session for Master’s students, where they explored the powerful capabilities of Materialise software.

Learning the basics of navigating the platform to working with real patient CT scan data, the students gained practical experience in generating accurate 3D anatomical models, a crucial skill in modern medical engineering and research.

What the session covered:

• Introduction to essential Materialise tools and workflows.
• Importing and segmenting CT scan datasets.
• Creating detailed and precise 3D models.
• Understanding slicing techniques and how models are prepared for 3D printing.

This training not only expanded technical skills but also demonstrated how digital workflows and additive manufacturing continue to transform healthcare innovation.

CRPM is proudly hosted by The Central University of Technology, Free State.

We are honoured to share the inspiring story of Matthew Booth.

Since August, Matthew has been using a new custom titanium 3D-printed tracheostomy tube designed with an improved internal diameter and fenestration holes, complemented by a fl**ge assembly. This advanced design has significantly enhanced his breathing, particularly during intense physical activity. One of his most remarkable accomplishments with the new trach tube was completing the 98 km Ride Joburg 947 Cycle Tour in just 3 hours and 1 minute on a standard 29-inch mountain bike, an extraordinary achievement for any cyclist.

Beyond physical improvements, this innovation boosted Matthew’s confidence and athletic potential. He’s now among the fastest long-distance runners at his school and thriving academically.

We sincerely thank Dr. Tim Capon for his unwavering support and medical expertise, as well as to the dedicated doctors, engineers, partners, and the team at the Central University of Technology, Free State, for their exceptional work in designing and manufacturing the custom 3D-printed titanium tracheostomy tube. Your dedication demonstrates the incredible power of technology truly changing lives.

“Thank you again for your time and expertise in the development and manufacturing of Matthew’s titanium trach tube. You’ve made an enormous difference in Matthew’s life, physically, emotionally, and socially. We are all deeply grateful.”
– Mr. Damian Booth (Matthew’s Father)"

We had an incredible time presenting the exciting world of 3D printing to the learners of Eunice Primary School in association with iClix Bloemfontein.

We explored the differences between subtractive and additive manufacturing, dived into the basics of 3D printing. The session was packed with innovation and hands-on learning. There was a live demonstration where we scanned a teacher’s face using a 3D scanner and printed the model on an FDM machine. We also showcased how 3D printing is changing lives, from creating custom implants for patients to helping animals with 3D printed solutions. To end off the day, learners got creative with a fun challenge building towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti, and the tallest tower teams took the win.

A heartfelt thank you to iClix and Eunice Primary School for the opportunity to share the future of manufacturing with such bright young minds.

As global leaders gather at the G20 to discuss innovation and sustainability, The Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) is proud to contribute to the conversation through cutting-edge research in Additive Manufacturing.

We are exploring advanced material properties that enhance performance and durability in medical and industrial applications.

We are also pushing boundaries in powder recycling, helping reduce waste and promote circular manufacturing. CRPM conducts tests on each batch of recycled powder to verify it continues to comply with the standards specified for powder recycling.

Innovation is not just about technology, it is about responsibility.

We are thrilled to support Koffiefontein Combined School as they participate in the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow – Design The Future Competition, showcasing their creativity and engineering skills through a custom-designed tram model.

As part of their Samsung Solve For Tomorrow journey, the learners are exploring the use of 3D printing to bring their concept to life printing the track and docking station. With guidance from the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) at The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT, FS), they are taking their ideas from concept to reality.

We are proud to host these bright young minds for a hands-on day at the university, where they will refine their design and experience the power of innovation in action.

Thank you to Koffiefontein Combined School for the opportunity to collaborate on this inspiring initiative. We are proud to support your journey and excited to see your creativity come to life.
