🌎 Obesity is now one of the biggest global health challenges — linked to 3.7 million deaths in 2024 and costing the world over US$3 trillion every year.

😱 Without action, the number of people living with obesity could double by 2030.

To help change this, WHO has released its first-ever guideline on using GLP-1 therapies to treat obesity as a chronic disease — not a personal failure.

✅ WHO recommends GLP-1 medicines alongside healthy eating, regular activity, and professional care.

⚖️ The goal: make treatment accessible, fair, and lifelong.

🚶‍♀️ Small steps count — move daily, choose nutritious foods, and seek medical advice if struggling with weight.

As Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said:

“Medication alone won’t solve this crisis — but it can help millions live healthier, happier lives.”

🩺 Protect Our Students – Meningococcal Disease Awareness

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has issued new recommendations on the prevention of meningococcal disease among tertiary students in South Africa.

This serious—but preventable—disease can cause sudden illness, death, or long-term disability, particularly among first-year university students living in residences or shared accommodation.

🧠 The NICD recommends:

✅ Raising awareness about meningococcal disease and its symptoms
✅ Promoting vaccination for first-year students and those in shared-living environments
✅ Strengthening collaboration between the Departments of Health and Higher Education to improve vaccine access and affordability

While the recommendations focus on South Africa, other SADC countries are encouraged to take note—given the shared mobility and health risks among students across the region.

Let’s work together to protect the health of our young leaders through awareness and prevention. 💉🌍

🩸 Focus on Anaemia: Vitamin B12 Deficiency

💡 What it is:
When your body doesn’t have enough vitamin B12 to make healthy red blood cells — reducing oxygen and energy levels.

⚠️ Signs & Symptoms:

Constant tiredness or weakness

Pale or yellow skin

Numbness or tingling in hands or feet

Dizziness or shortness of breath

Memory loss, confusion, or mood changes

💔 If Untreated:
Can lead to nerve damage, heart problems, pregnancy complications, and long-term fatigue.

💊 Treatment & Management:

Vitamin B12 supplements or injections

Treat underlying causes (e.g. digestive issues)

Eat B12-rich foods

Regular blood tests and doctor follow-ups

✅ Prevention:
Eat well, avoid alcohol, and check B12 levels regularly — especially for vegans, older adults, or those on long-term medication.

📘 Did you know?
Severe Vitamin B12 deficiency is a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) — your medical scheme must cover treatment when it’s life-threatening.
