Van der Walt Optometrists The team is service and quality driven. You as the patient can be assured that your vision will remain our focus!

Van der Walt Optometrists is an individual optometric practice owned by registered optometrist Truter van der Walt. The practice itself has a long and successful history in Bloemfontein being in existence for the better part of 30 years, albeit trading under the name of the previous owner, Trevor Skinner. In November 2009 Trevor immigrated to New Zealand and Truter van der Walt took over the reigns of the practice. September 2013 saw the revamp of the practice and also the name change to Van der Walt Optometrists. Truter van der Walt graduated at the University of the Free State in 2006. He obtained his degree with distinction and graduated top of his class. Postgraduate he obtained a diploma in Sportsvision from the Universtity of Johannesburg in 2010. Other than optometry his big passion is staying fit, living healthy and pushing himself to new boundaries, therefore his regular participation in the Ironman 70.3 and other ultra distance triathlons! In the practice he is assisted by Aldi Nicolaisen at the front desk. Aldi has been in the optometry industry for the last 25 years. Always prepared to walk the extra mile and medical aids … she knows them inside out! In the laboratory you will find George Mckenzie. The always friendly, always helpfull George has been with the practice since 1984. Putting the final product together is his art, not to even mention his magician status when it comes to spectacle repairs! The person responsible for the always shiny, neat and tidy office and the best coffee in Bloemfontein is Lizzy Nyokong. Lizzy has been working in the practice since 2006 and her biggest blessing in life is her little girl named Hlompho. This team is totally service and quality driven. The professionalism and integrity that day to day tasks are performed with are the backbone of its success and you as the patient can be assured that your vision will remain our focus!

Screen time is a big part of modern life, but there are still many misconceptions about how it affects our eyes and overall well-being. 👀📱

Not all screen time is the same. Educational content and creative activities can be beneficial, and many people also use digital platforms to connect and communicate with others. The key is balance. ✨

Screens can be a helpful tool, but they shouldn’t replace real-world interaction, play, and time away from devices. Finding a healthy balance helps support both eye health and overall well-being.

Too much screen time can affect more than just your eyes. 👀💻

Extended time on screens may lead to physical strain, such as eye fatigue, headaches, and discomfort in the neck or shoulders. It can also contribute to mental strain, including increased stress, disrupted sleep patterns, and difficulty switching off. Over time, excessive screen use may even have a developmental impact, affecting focus, creativity, and real-life interaction.

Being mindful of screen habits and taking regular breaks can help support both your eye health and overall well-being. 👓✨

Your eyes work hard every day, especially with long hours spent on screens. 👀💻

If you’re experiencing symptoms like dry or watery eyes, blurred vision, headaches, light sensitivity, or burning eyes, it could be a sign that your eyes are feeling the strain.

Taking regular breaks, adjusting screen habits, and making sure your vision is properly supported can help reduce eye fatigue.

If these symptoms happen often, it may be time to book an eye examination. 👓✨

Your child’s vision plays a big role in how they learn, play and grow. 👓
And too much screen time can cause problems with their eye health and development.

Screens are part of everyday life for most children. From schoolwork to entertainment. Helping your child develop healthy screen habits, encouraging regular breaks, and ensuring their vision is checked regularly can make a big difference to their eye health and learning. 🤓

If you’re unsure whether your child’s eyes are coping well with screen time, a comprehensive eye exam can help give you peace of mind.

Healthy vision starts with healthy nutrition. 🥕👀

A balanced diet plays an important role in your child’s eye development. Nutrients like Vitamin A, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and Vitamin C help support strong, healthy eyes and protect them as they grow.

Foods such as carrots, leafy greens, fish, and fresh fruits can all contribute to maintaining good vision and supporting overall eye health.

Encouraging healthy eating habits early on can make a lasting difference in your child’s visual development. 🌱🍎

Teachers often notice the little things first. 👩‍🏫 👀

Staying in regular contact with your child’s teacher can help you identify early signs of possible vision or learning difficulties. Small changes, like struggling to see the board, losing focus, or avoiding reading, can sometimes point to an underlying eye issue.

The earlier something is picked up, the sooner it can be addressed.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision, we’re here to help. 💛

☀️👀 UV rays don’t take a season off, and neither should your eye protection.

In this video, Truter explains why protecting your eyes from UV exposure is just as important in winter as it is in summer. From cloudy days to time spent outdoors, harmful rays are present all year round and can contribute to long-term eye damage. Your eyes deserve protection 365 days a year. 👓

If you’re unsure whether your current lenses offer proper UV protection, we'll help you get sorted.
