What do we offer?

Child and adolescent educational assessments and interventions:

- School readiness

UNIBS follows a holistic approach to the assessment of school readiness which encompasses the cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social development of the prospective learner.

- General scholastic and emotional evaluations

All aspects critical to optimising the scholastic functioning of the learner are assessed. This type of assessment is often requested to identify possible learning difficulties and emotional or social hindrances to the scholastic success of the learner. These assessments also provide insight into adjustment and/or behavioural difficulties within the school environment.

- Subject choice assessments

UNIBS makes use of an integrated approach to helping learners make subject choices that are cognisant of their specific abilities while placing them in a position to select from the widest range of careers and/or tertiary educational opportunities. The assessment of interest, aptitudes, proficiency, as well as study habits and attitudes forms the basis upon which recommendations are made.

- Career counselling

UNIBS assists learners in exploring appropriate career options by engaging them in a dynamic decision-making process which integrates the development of self-knowledge (personality, aptitudes, interests and values), the acquisition of career information, the development of decision-making skills and the enhancement of career maturity into choosing a career path.

- Developmental programmes (life skills-, study skills- and parental guidance programmes)

Currently UNIBS offers a wide variety of life skills programmes to individuals across the lifespan. To ensure optimal personal development, programmes are presented to groups of no more than 10 to 15 learners. The content and purpose of these programmes are adapted according to the specific needs of the schools/learners. Topics include the development of self-esteem, anxiety management, dealing with perfectionism, management of guilt feelings, anger management, addressing behavioural problems and the development of social skills. UNIBS is also in a position to offer intervention programmes tailored to the specific needs of learners, e.g. bullying and adjustment following divorce. Information evenings and courses are developed according to the specific needs of the parents and schools. Currently, programmes led by a registered psychologist and an intern psychologist, are being implemented at four Bloemfontein schools.
