Teachers are doing more than ever — and it’s taking a toll.

In South African classrooms today, teachers aren’t just educators.
They’re often counsellors, social workers, mediators, caregivers, and crisis responders — all while trying to teach.

At the same time, classrooms are becoming more diverse and complex:
• Multiple home languages
• Wide gaps in learning levels
• Increased emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs
• Learners affected by poverty, trauma, and instability

Teachers are expected to meet these needs with limited time, training, and support.

This emotional labour matters.
Supporting teachers’ wellbeing isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s essential for sustainable teaching and meaningful learning.

There are no surprises here, but teaching (and the role of teachers) have changed since most teachers were at school. Previously the focus was mainly on teaching subject content. Now the focus centres on improving student wellness, using AI and technology ethically; encouraging lifelong learning through personalised, skills-based curricula, and empowering self-directed learners, all while strengthening foundational skills, supporting teachers' professional growth, and using data to drive instruction. What a mouthful!

Teacher burnout is real! We know the end of the year is almost here, and for many teachers, it's been a long and difficult one. Offering hope, recognising the need for flexible opportunities for continued learning, and appreciating the unique strengths each teacher brings to the classroom are just some aspects which are vital to improve teacher morale.
