How to empower employees with disabilities in your workplace👇

Embracing disabilities in the workplace goes well beyond the hiring process. Your company needs to foster an inclusive environment backed by long-term strategies and support systems to set people with disabilities up for success.
🔴Implement company-wide training on disability inclusion.
🔴Hire a consultant to help with your company-wide training on disability inclusion.
🔴Provide support for employees with disabilities.
🔴Communicate your disability plan internally.
🔴Don't forget the Golden Rule-Employees with disabilities can be as productive as ordinary employees. The key is to match the right candidate with the right job. Once you hire employees with disabilities, you need to treat them as people who possess the core skills requires for their job. Hold them to similar standards as other employees.
Don’t shy away from giving them feedback or correcting them when they make mistakes. Employees with disabilities need to feel that they are doing their best for the business, and you should help them identify areas of improvement. Such an approach to employee management can also prop up employees with disabilities for opportunities to advance in their careers as they fine-tune their skills.
The job market is overflowing with an untapped talent pool of people with disabilities, both visible and hidden. The sooner employers can tap into this pool, the better they can make their organizations. Such an approach will increase workplace engagement, employee retention rates, innovation, and employee morale. Revamp your workplace to support employees with disabilities and enjoy the benefits.

Disability empowerment and work – 3/4.
Why is great for business👇

🔴Attract a bigger customer base
Employees with disabilities will have a better chance of sympathizing with customers who face similar circumstances. - If you have a deaf customer, deaf employees can easily communicate with them through sign language. As a result, such customers have a higher chance of sticking with your business since they feel accepted when interacting with you. Also, your business's public image will improve, attracting more customers.
🔴Boosting productivity and creativity
Embracing disabilities in the workplace is a sure way to raise the levels of diversity in your workplace. According to Forbes, diverse companies have the ability to produce 19% more revenue than their counterparts. This is because it ensures that there is a wide scope of ideas, minds, and approaches to problems and their solutions.
The different people involved in the problem-solving process can easily identify solutions and come up with innovations that will increase the overall profitability of your business. For instance, employees with a disability might come up with ideas on how to make one of your products more inclusive, which opens your business up to an entirely new market.
🔴Increasing employee morale
Studies show that members of today's workforce are more interested in working for a purpose than ever before. Modern employees want to know that their roles at companies are helping others for the better. Hiring individuals with disabilities advances this mission.

Disability empowerment and work – 2/4.
Common disabilities in the Workplace.
🔴 Physical impairments: Back or spinal injuries account for the largest number of ADA claims made today. People with these types of injuries may be unable to perform physical tasks such as standing for long periods of time or lifting. Other physical impairments could impact a worker's hands, arms, or legs. These can be temporary conditions or permanent ones.
🔴 Mental/psychological disabilities: Whether it's a depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder (called PTSD), mental or psychological impairments can be limiting for workers who have them. These conditions are non-apparent compared to a physical condition such as a back injury.
🔴 Neurological impairments: Neurological impairments include things like epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, or even severe migraines. They may not be readily visible to the naked eye, but that doesn't diminish their significance for the people affected by them.
🔴 Vision/hearing disabilities: Hearing loss or deafness and those who have vision loss or are completely blind may be common disabilities that your workers experience.
🔴 Intellectual impairments: Employees with intellectual impairments could have autism, Down's syndrome, or a traumatic brain injury, among others

Disability empowerment and work – 1/3.
Working with a disability can present many different physical and mental challenges. These tips can help you adapt to new circumstances, overcome workplace obstacles, and enjoy a fulfilling career.

...Barriers that people with disabilities often face in the workplace, include:
🔴Anxiety or lack of confidence. Self-doubt may keep you from pursuing new opportunities or returning to a familiar job.
🔴Difficulty adapting to new limitations. A new disability may slow you down as you learn new ways to handle tasks. For instance, you might need time to learn how to use assistive technology, such as speech-to-text devices.
🔴Difficulty finding new job opportunities. You might have a hard time finding inclusive workplaces or a job that aligns with your strengths.
🔴Physical barriers. You might encounter environments that aren't suited to your physical needs, such as a building with inadequate wheelchair accessibility.
🔴Inflexible work patterns. Strict work hours or policies about taking breaks can make it difficult for you to focus on your physical or mental needs while on the job.
🔴Attitudes of employers and co-workers. Social stigmas surrounding your disability can be discouraging. Employers and co-workers might underestimate your abilities, misunderstand you, or discriminate against you.

‼️ Some of these barriers may seem so daunting that you consider giving up on the idea of employment altogether. However, for many people, work offers a sense of daily purpose and an opportunity for social interaction. A regular job can help give your days structure and provide you a greater sense of financial dependence.

Whatever your disability, there are various strategies that can make it easier for you to find and maintain a fulfilling job that's right for you. Self-knowledge, patience, and a willingness to advocate for yourself are keys to finding satisfaction in the workplace.

Downloadable sign language dictionary. 📱🤙
The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), in partnership with the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), launched a South African sign language (SASL) dictionary in video format at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town on Thursday, September 1, 2022.
The dictionary’s aim is to bridge the communication gap between people who are hearing impaired and those who can hear. According to PanSALB communications manager Siphiwe Mabasa, “It has been an honour for PanSALB to be the one authenticating the SASL dictionary and also driving the development and recognition of sign language as an official language in South Africa.”
In an interview with ThisAbility, Dirkie Ebersohn, who is the content development manager at NID, said the SASL dictionary is now available in English and sign language, and it is available to anyone in the world. “You can download the SASL dictionary app on your smartphone, tablet or laptop from Google Play Store or Apple iStore. The SASL dictionary has a subscription fee of R40 per month or R400 per year,” he added.
The SASL dictionary consists of over 3 000 signs which include synonyms and 2 500 English words. Users can search for the English word to see the corresponding SASL sign in clear high-definition video. The video can be slowed down to suit the user’s preference, for example when learning how to sign an entire sentence.
It gives one an option to learn one word in two variations, the standardised SASL, and another which uses signs that have been borrowed from other signing communities around the world.
