Do you know why we celebrate the International Day of Light? 💭

Originally it was to commemorate the first successful laser surgery operation, the day now serves as a celebration for all light-based technologies! 💡

It focuses on the betterment of humanity, specifically by promoting international peace, security and sustainability 🌈✨️

Today we acknowledge the scientific achievements that drive our laser technology towards sustainable advancements in fields such as optical medicine, communication, energy and computing 🌠

👀 To celebrate we are hosting an exciting event at the Wits Digital Dome, swipe to learn more

15/05/2025

The International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May each year, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. This day is a call to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development.
The Wits Optics Student Chapter is showcasing applications of light, from lasers, microscopes, and cameras to solar panels, chemical reactions and fluorescent animals at the Digital Dome on 16 and 17 May.

On Monday, the 14th of April, we celebrated World Quantum Day as part of our ongoing International Year of Quantum events 🌟

Thank you to Professor Joao Rodrigues, Dr Sam van Leuven, Dr Kelvin Mpofu and Mr Ndivhuwo Nyase for giving such interesting talks - ranging from the history of Quantum mechanics and Quantum black holes to Quantum biosensing and Quantum machine learning 🌠

We ended off the day with an exciting Quantum Quizzics event. Congratulations to "The True Neelan" team for being the quiz winners! 🌈✨️

And a massive thank you to .quti & WitsQ for organizing the event with us 😊

🌌 The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology has arrived! 🌌

🌟 Join The Wits Optics Student Chapter as we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the formulation of quantum mechanics.  We have many exciting events in superposition this year so be sure to observe this space.

✨️ In 1925 our mathematical view of the world was reinterpreted by Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and Pascual Jordan in the form of matrix quantum mechanics. Soon after,  Erwin Shroëdinger showed us that our reality is far stranger than expected as he unveiled the duality between particles and waves of probability. This probabilistic view of the world left many great minds uneasy, with even the great Einstien proclaiming that God would not leave the universe to a game of chance.

✨️ Yet, as undeterministic as our future may be, the role that quantum mechanics has played in advancing humanity remains undeniable, with vast amounts of technologies accelerating our everyday lives made possible through this quantum understanding!

If you’re seeing this post it’s probably because of what’s under that this manhole.

The Melkbosstrand Cable Landing Station receives the SAT-3 and SAFE subsea cables as well as Google’s new Equiano cable, forming the backbone of South Africa’s internet connection to the rest of the world. About 170 Terabits of data can pass through it in a second!

Our members were fortunate enough to take a trip to the station as part of our week long fiber optic communication workshop so stay tuned to see what else we got up to🙌
