Magic happened last night and we were privileged to witness it. ❤️
A huge welcome to the sweetest little girl, who made everyone wait and test their patience for quite a bit. She then proceeded to show us that the reverse can also be true and come in such a hurry that there was no time for any of our plans.
Melissa Marais and Brendan, congratulations to the birth of your beautiful sweet baby girl. You surely have an amazing birth story to tell.
What a privilege for us to be able to witness these miracles, see the strength of women and be a part of these special times in people's lives Mary-Jane Smith how I love to work with you.

One of my all-time favourites at antenatal appointments is to involve the siblings. This little guy is always a helper when I arrive. He wants to help with the blood pressure and very keen to also listen to his baby sister's heartbeat. He even showed me that he recently got his own stethoscope
He will be a great big brother

Our Eating Disorder Support for Moms and Birthing People (Pregnancy-4 Years Postpartum) is a virtual peer-led support group is designed for moms and birthing people in the perinatal period (from pregnancy up to 4 years after birth) who are currently experiencing or have experienced eating disorders. No formal diagnosis is required to join.

We welcome individuals navigating all forms of disordered eating, including restrictive patterns, compensatory behaviors, overexercising, obsessive over food and body thoughts, rigid thoughts and beliefs around food and body, excessive concerns about health, compulsive body checking and weighing, constant food noise and distressing thoughts about body. The postpartum period—and life with young children—can bring unique challenges that make recovery and self-care even more complex. This group offers a brave, judgment-free space to connect with others who truly understand.

Whether you’re considering recovery or have been in recovery for some time, you are welcome here. Together, we share stories, resources, and encouragement—with the goal of reducing isolation and building hope.

All babies lose some weight in the first 24 hours. If you received IV fluids during labour, your baby may lose even more, not because of feeding, but because the fluids make the birth weight look higher than it really is.

That’s why the 24-hour weight is the most accurate starting point for tracking growth.

Researchers in Canada found that using the 24-hour weight instead of the birth weight helped more babies stay exclusively breastfed in their first few days of life.

Growing well = getting enough milk. ❤️

❤️1-7 August World Breastfeeding week ❤️
Supported by WHO, UNICEF and many Ministries of Health and civil society partners, World Breastfeeding Week is held in the first week of August every year.

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival and yet currently, fewer than half of infants under 6 months old are exclusively breastfed.

In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed World Breastfeeding Week as an important health promotion strategy. With a different theme each year, it aims to promote the enabling environments that help women to breastfeed – including support in the community and the workplace, with adequate protections in government policies and laws - as well as sharing information on breastfeeding benefits and strategies.

Another study demonstrating how Breastmilk is different for every individual baby. Your baby gets milk that is exactly right with the right composition for your baby at that exact time.

Although colostrum and mature milk are well studied, less is known about how colostrum composition varies across different birthweight categories in term infants.

This cross-sectional study (N = 252) compared colostrum collected on postpartum day 2 from individuals who delivered term infants classified as small (SGA), appropriate (AGA), or large (LGA) for gestational age.

Results showed:
🔹 Higher protein content in colostrum from the SGA and LGA groups compared to AGA
🔹 Higher carbohydrate content in the LGA group compared to AGA
🔹 No differences in fat or energy content

Multivariate analysis confirmed that SGA and LGA status were independently associated with higher protein levels, and LGA status was also associated with higher carbohydrate levels.

These findings suggest that macronutrient composition in colostrum may adapt based on infant size at birth, even when gestational age is similar. Further research is needed to understand the implications for early infant feeding and metabolism.

IIsn’t it amazing? Colostrum (the first milk) tailors its composition to each newborn's unique needs. This 2025 exploratory cross-sectional study found that the level of protein, carbs & fat in colostrum vary depending on whether a baby is born small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age, or large for gestational age (LGA).
