As speech therapist I often feel pressured by parents, teachers and clients to get to this “prize”. Thank you Stuttering Therapy Resources, Inc for this!! Fluency is NOT a prize to be won!!
This quote highlights a theme that kept coming up in therapy over the past few weeks, so we created a theme around it this week in
*
As our students prepared for the end of summer/return to school, we were overflowing with discussions surrounding the pressures that arise when “fluent speech” becomes an expectation from listeners, especially in certain school speaking situations [and can we help change this PLEASE]!
*
We all know that the world does not “GET” stuttering!
The variability nature of stuttering confuses people, and there is an expectation that that if they our students have “fluent speech” sometimes - then it should be something they can achieve all the time.
*
Myth. Myth. Myth.
*
Stuttering is NOT the problem. Expectation of fluency is a problem.
*
Fluency is NOT a prize to be won for hard work, or practice, or “slowing down” or.. or… or….
*
We all need to support our students and expect them to stutter! (See our earlier post quoting Chris Constantino)
We can also empower school environments and society to do the same!
