The Lewis Library at Wytham Estate

Steeped in over a century of history, the Lewis Library stands as a beautiful bridge between Wytham Estate’s storied past and its refined present.

Originally the private study of businessman Stanley Lewis, who purchased the estate in 1961, this room once hosted countless business meetings and conversations that shaped an era. Today, lovingly restored by AVIEW Developers, it remains a cornerstone of the estate — a peaceful, book-lined retreat for residents to gather, reflect, and connect.

From its beginnings in the 1880s, when Henry Beard first built the grand house on subdivided Stellenberg land, through Judge James Stratford’s time as owner, to its thoughtful transformation in 2017, Wytham Estate continues to honour its heritage while embracing modern living.

A Legacy of Craft & Creativity

In 1859, Dr Jonas M. Hiddingh purchased Newlands House on the Newlands Estate. Around this time, several breweries had developed in Newlands thanks to the high-quality water. Building on this tradition, Dr Hiddingh established Cannon Brewery in 1874, which quickly became one of Cape Town’s most iconic breweries. The cannon on its facade became a symbol of its legacy.

Today, this historic site is being reimagined as Cannon Brewery, a premier retirement community that honours its past while embracing the future.
