Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness Practice Offering mindfulness-based programs in-person (NPO spaces in Cape Town) and online (everyone welcome)

Mindfulness is the practice of developing focused awareness of the present moment without judgement. Children that practice mindfulness regularly are better able to recognise and regulate their emotions, instead of being consumed by them. In our weekly sessions, we help children aged 5 – 12 develop an awareness of the present moment. This leads to a reduction in anxious thoughts about past and future events. They are able to respond more consciously and calmly to challenging situations. In short, children that practise mindfulness regularly are

* better able to focus and concentrate
* experience increased calm
* experience decreased stress and anxiety
* experience improved impulse control
* have increased self-awareness
* able to respond skilfully to difficult emotions
* are empathetic and understanding of others
* have natural conflict resolution skills

I found this memoir by full of wisdom and deep insight. A remarkable book filled with many passages that invite one to re-read and reflect on, again and again.

From the book "Patient 12A" by Lesedi Molefi:
"Anxiety is the body’s warning sign, it’s communication. That’s why we’re here: to figure out why we are anxious, not to make the anxiety or bad feelings magically go away. You can’t laugh about reality when you’re running from it or escaping it. You have to embrace the world, and everything it gives."

Mindfulness teaches us to turn towards these warning signals from the body, with an attitude of kindness, warmth, friendliness, curiosity and patience. Breathing and softening. Allowing.

I recently finished reading the brilliant, thought-provoking book, "Patient 12A" by Lesedi Molefi. Deeply personal, Lesedi generously shares his wisdom and insights on embracing all that defines us.

From the book:
"You came here hell-bent on knowing who you are and have only found who you have been, who you’ve had to be, and who you pretend to be. You don’t know who you are in the future. But you’ll be there, waiting for yourself to arrive.

Be bold in the pursuit of yourself. Pull up for brunch, go to concerts, take chances. Dance alone and let your childlike spirit show. Buy the things you so badly want. Live. Learn to trust yourself again."

Today I learnt that there is an isiXhosa phrase similar to The Story of the Lotus Flower. The direct translation of the isiXhosa is "the lily grows out of the swamp". But the message is the same. That our circumstances or suffering do not define our worth or potential. That the lotus / lily is a survivor. Each petal that blooms out of the mud is an achievement to be recognized and celebrated. Growth and transformation, despite or maybe even because of difficulty, is possible.
