World AIDS Day: Progress and Commitment

Today we reflect on how far we've come in HIV care. Modern treatment allows people living with HIV to lead full, healthy lives with undetectable viral loads—meaning they cannot transmit the virus.

Yet stigma remains our greatest challenge. We're here to provide confidential testing, treatment, and support without judgement. Early diagnosis and consistent care make all the difference.

Let's continue breaking down barriers to care and building a community where everyone feels safe seeking help. Knowledge is prevention; compassion is healing.

Hi everyone, Especially the Gents.

As men we are prone to be the tough ones in the family dynamic. This often leads to ignoring certain health issues and delaying seeking help.

Let us take a step towards focussing on our health and getting regular check-ups ranging form our heart health to our mental health etc.

Book your visit to get the checks to ensure that you are healthy and that you remain healthy in order to take care of your family.

Are you exhausted despite adequate sleep? This isn't normal, and you're not "just getting older". Chronic fatigue often signals underlying issues - iron deficiency, thyroid problems, vitamin D deficiency, or even sleep apnoea where you're not actually getting quality rest.

In my practice, we run comprehensive blood panels checking everything from your B12 levels to thyroid function. Sometimes the solution is as simple as going onto a good supplement or other medication. Other times, we discover hidden inflammation or autoimmune conditions.

Our Energy Boost IV drip can provide some good relief while we investigate root causes. Don't accept exhaustion as your new normal - your body is trying to tell you something important.

Today is World Diabetes Day, and I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge how challenging it is for someone to live with this condition.
Whether you have Type 1, Type 2, or prediabetes, the daily vigilance required, for instance, monitoring blood sugar, managing medications, adjusting your diet, can feel really overwhelming at times.

The good news is that with proper support and management, most people with diabetes can lead full, active lives. Regular check-ups, good glycaemic control, and early intervention for complications make an enormous difference.

If you're struggling with your diabetes management or simply need a review of your current treatment plan, please don't hesitate to book an appointment. Small adjustments can often yield significant improvements in how you feel day-to-day.

Remember, managing diabetes isn't about perfection, it’s about consistent care and having the right support alongside you.

Infected toes from at-home attempts to fix ingrown nails are becoming quite common. In most cases it is better to have it looked at by a doctor. This will likely prevent the need for unnecessary anti-biotic use for complications.

These infections (particularly for people with diabetes) can become quite serious and lead to long recovery times.

There's a straightforward procedure we offer called partial nail avulsion with phenolisation. It's done under local anaesthetic, takes about 30 minutes, and prevents the nail from growing back into the skin. Most people notice the relief quite quickly and can walk out the same day.

If you've been struggling with an ingrown toenail, it's worth getting it looked at properly. One simple procedure with proper follow-up can resolve the problem.

This week marks National Stroke Week (28 October–3 November), and it's worth pausing to consider how common strokes have become in South Africa.

The statistics are sobering: stroke is a leading cause of death in our country, yet many of us don't recognise the warning signs until it's too late.

Remember F.A.S.T:
- Face: drooping
- Arm: weakness
- Speech: difficulty
- Time: to call emergency services

The crucial thing to understand is that brain cells die within minutes of a stroke. Every second counts. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, don't wait to see if they improve – get help immediately.

As a family medicine specialist, I see patients who've survived strokes, and the difference between those who received treatment within the golden hour and those who didn't is profound. Early intervention can mean the difference between full recovery and permanent disability.

⚠️Prevention remains our best tool
Managing blood pressure, staying active, eating sensibly, and not smoking all significantly reduce your risk. If you have diabetes or atrial fibrillation, keeping these conditions well-controlled is essential.

Let's clear this up - while many circumcisions are indeed religious or cultural, there are significant medical benefits. The WHO recommends it in high HIV-prevalence areas like South Africa. Medical reasons include recurrent infections, phimosis (tight fo****in), and chronic inflammation.

In my rooms, we perform circumcisions using local anaesthetic - it's a straightforward 30-minute procedure. Adults often seek it for hygiene reasons or recurring balanitis. The medical evidence is clear: circumcised men have lower rates of pe**le cancer, UTIs, and certain STIs. Whether for medical, religious, or personal reasons, it's your choice - but make it an informed one.

Here's the thing - as a Family Medicine Specialist, I've done additional years of training beyond regular GP qualification. This means I can handle more complex cases, perform minor surgical procedures in-rooms (saving you hospital costs), and manage chronic conditions that might otherwise need multiple specialist referrals.

Think of me as a medical Swiss Army knife - I can do your vasectomy on a Tuesday, compile your diabetic care plan on Wednesday, and remove that troublesome ingrown toenail the following week. All under one roof, with continuity of care.

This animation? It's happening in your arteries as we speak. The deadly trio - high cholesterol, hypertension, and chronic stress - creates a perfect storm. The scariest part? No symptoms until it's almost too late. In my rooms, we do comprehensive cardiac risk assessments, checking not just cholesterol but inflammation markers and arterial stiffness.

If you're over 35, have family history, or any risk factors, don't wait for chest pain. Prevention is a choice. Treatment is not.
