Trauma is an unexpected, sudden horrific event in which an individual responds with the sense of helplessness, diminished sense of self and ability to feel a full range of emotions. It is a normal response to an abnormal situation. I often take time to create a safe and warm therapeutic environment so that an individual can feel safe to explore the horrific event then ease them slowly into reliving the trauma. It is also useful to educate around trauma and provide them with tools to cope with in between therapy sessions.
