Padel Tennis (Padel) is a dynamic racquet sport. It is a mix between tennis and squash and is usually played in doubles on an enclosed court surrounded by glass walls. The ball can bounce off any wall, but can only hit the astroturf once before being returned. Padel is a sport for everyone. It is quick and easy to learn, suitable for all age groups (children to elderly), it is lots of fun and is proving to be a highly addictive sport to play.

Always remember to warm up properly before starting your game. Wear appropriate shoes to avoid ankle sprains. Make sure your racquet and grip are correct to avoid tennis elbow and wrist injuries. Stretch and/or foam roll after your game. Include sport-specific strengthening/core exercises in your weekly routine.

Several dietary and lifestyle changes may strengthen your body's natural defenses and help you fight harmful pathogens or disease-causing organisms.

1. Get enough good quality sleep.
2. Eat more whole plant foods.
3. Eat more healthy fats eg. olive oil and salmon.
4. Pay attention to your gut health- gut health and immunity are deeply connected.
5. Limit added sugars.
6. Engage in moderate exercise.
7. Stay hydrated.
8. Manage your stress levels.
9. Supplement wisely.
10. Do not smoke and make sure you consume alcohol in moderation.

Overtraining Syndrome

We have noticed recently, that with the start of sporting events and races combined with the stress/pressures of the last year, more people are at risk of burnout or overtraining syndrome.

Overtraining syndrome is a condition in which an athlete experiences fatigue and declining performance in sport despite continuing or increased training. Overtraining can result in mood changes, decreased motivation, frequent injuries and even illness.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are a number of ways you can manage overtraining naturally.
Rest and recover, ensure adequate hydration, ensure good daily and sports nutrition, cross training, sports massage and stress reduction techniques.

Pain is influenced by emotions and the cycle of pain and emotions are interrelated. Emotions may directly impact physical changes as well. For example, when you are anxious or angry, your muscles may tighten and that physical change may also contribute to increased pain.
Exercise improves mental health by decreasing anxiety, depression and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Deep breathing helps to decrease stress, increase calm and relieve pain.
Our holistic management is an approach that takes into account the emotional and mental needs of our patients in addition to their physical state.

COVID-19 PRACTICE UPDATE

As physiotherapists, we are part of the essential medical service providers. We will officially be open from 4 May 2020.
The safety of our patients and physiotherapists is of the utmost importance to us. For this reason, we have adapted to the COVID-19 period and have strict hygiene protocols, procedures and screening in place.
In addition to in-person consultations, we are also available for remote services via online or telephonic platforms.
While we must all do our best in preventing the spread of COVID-19, we should also ensure that we do not neglect any acute or chronic healthcare needs during this time.
