What does Women’s Day (9 August) mean to you?
- To the girl who was circumcised, Women’s Day is likely the dream of a very different future (1 in every 20 women on the planet have suffered FGM)
- To the girl who is a head of state, Women’s Day is likely a reminder of how far we have come (not long ago her abilities were completely overshadowed by her identity)
- To the girl whose career was stripped away by the Taliban, Women’s Day is likely a reminder of how quickly we can regress (where her identity now overshadows her abilities)
- To the judge who witnesses the sickening frequency of domestic violence, Women’s Day is likely a reminder of the primal nature of physical strength
- To the father of daughters in a home that celebrates the individual (over identity), Women’s Day is likely a day to revel in all that is unique between women and men in the house
- To the girl who is 10 years old, who in her short life, has only been treated with respect and who views her gender as her greatest asset, Women’s Day is likely a confusing day, begging the question, why do we need a day?
No woman is captured by all women. No man is captured by all men. Know that stereotyping and grouping people together based on their identities is convenient and often necessary. But never forget that every person is an individual and can never be overshadowed by their identity. Think carefully today before you use the word 'women'.
