Today, Dr Gercois Human, Dr Jateel Kassim, Dr Gareth Bydawell and the Cape Town Interventional Radiology team used cryoablation for the treatment of thyroid carcinoma at UCT Private Academic Hospital, a first in South Africa.

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive procedure where doctors use extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy cancer cells, under image guidance. In this case, the patient had recurrence of their papillary thyroid carcinoma (secondary tumours forming in different parts of the body as a result of the original tumour), even after the original thyroid cancer was surgically removed.

This marks the first time cryoablation has been used to treat this form of cancer spread in South Africa!
