The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) have launched a landmark multidisciplinary research initiative to investigate the political, economic and social drivers of harmful alcohol use in South Africa and Botswana and assess its far-reaching impacts. The five-year project aims to generate evidence that supports the co-creation of effective policies and community interventions with stakeholders to reduce alcohol-related harm.

As Science Forum South Africa 2025 comes to a close, the SAMRC celebrates a week of meaningful, future-shaping engagements with partners, researchers, students, and policy leaders.

On Tuesday, 25 November, our President & CEO, Prof. Ntobeko Ntusi, moderated a high-level session on the South Africa–Netherlands Partnership in Health, highlighting the importance of strong diplomatic, bi- and multilateral collaboration in advancing global health.

On Wednesday, 26 November, we hosted a packed session titled “Building a Healthier Nation for All Through Science and Medical Research.”
A dynamic panel of experts shared insights on health innovation, gender and health, climate change, population research, and epidemic preparedness:

🔹 Moderator: Dr Ebrahim Samodien – SAMRC Research Manager
🔹 Prof Ntobeko Ntusi – SAMRC President & CEO
🔹 Prof Nwabisa Shai – Director: Gender and Health Research Unit
🔹 Prof Caradee Wright – Chief Specialist Scientist: Climate Change & Human Health
🔹 Tinofa Mutevedzi – Research Operations Manager, SAPRIN
🔹 Prof Edmore Marinda – Co-director, Pan African Centre for Epidemic Research

Our exhibition booth was abuzz throughout the week as we engaged with students, researchers, and delegates who are passionate about building a healthier, more resilient South Africa.

And what better way to conclude our participation than by celebrating Prof Caradee Wright, who proudly bagged the Science Forum South Africa Science Diplomacy Award for “Science Advice that has Transcended National and International Spheres.”

A well-deserved recognition of scientific excellence and global impact.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared ideas, and strengthened collaborations. Together, we advance science for the benefit of all.

The South African Medical Research Council’s (SAMRC) Cochrane South Africa (CSA) hosted a high-level delegation from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Science and Innovation Directorate, for a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening evidence synthesis, knowledge translation, and policy-informed decision-making across the continent.

Dr Duduzile Ndwandwe, Specialist Scientist, CSA | Lead for Africa CDC Engagement said, “This engagement reflects our shared commitment to strengthening African-led evidence ecosystems that directly inform policy, practice, and public health action. Through our collaboration with Africa CDC, we are positioning Cochrane South Africa not only as a producer of high-quality evidence, but as a key translational partner that ensures research reaches the hands of decision-makers when it matters most.”

Prof Mark Engel CSA Unit Director, said "Cochrane mandate is to ensure that high-quality evidence is accessible, relevant, and actionable for policymakers and practitioners alike. Cochrane SA's engagement with Africa CDC affirms recognition of our facilitating role in evidence synthesis, rapid response research, and knowledge translation across Africa.”

Dr Nebiyu Dereje, Knowledge Management and Policy Translation Division, Africa CDC said, “Effective policy translation depends on strong knowledge systems and trusted evidence platforms. The work demonstrated by Cochrane South Africa and the SAMRC, particularly in digital knowledge management and evidence dissemination, aligns strongly with Africa CDC’s continental vision.”

Dr Natasha Langdown - Knowledge and Information Management Systems (KIMS), SAMRC, said
“Robust knowledge management systems are the backbone of evidence use. Through KIMS, the SAMRC is strengthening how institutional knowledge is curated, shared, and translated to support smarter, faster decision-making for public health impact.”

South Africa’s emerging scientists came together in Cape Town for the 17th Early Career Scientist Convention. A platform for young scientists to strengthen their skills, expand their networks, and position themselves to significantly influence the future of health research.

Hosted by the Research Capacity Development Division and guided by the theme “Empowering Emerging Researchers to Navigate Complexity and Drive Real-World Impact,” the event focused on the changing realities of global funding and collaboration, and what they mean for young researchers today.

Through discussions on AI in research, co-created research initiatives, and translating science into social impact, delegates explored how to apply their research in ways that make a meaningful difference. The Convention reaffirmed their critical role in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for communities across South Africa and beyond.

With insights from Professor Linda-Gail Bekker, Dr Brenda Kubheka, and other distinguished contributors, the programme was enriched with knowledge, leadership and foresight.

What is a low-cost air quality sensor, and how is it helping monitor pollution?

Air pollution affects millions, especially in . With pollutants like particulate matter (PM 2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) posing serious health risks, the South African Medical Research Council has been exploring ways to monitor and mitigate these threats.

Our research into low-cost sensors like Bonolo is helping bridge the gap where traditional air quality monitoring systems fall short. These sensors are a critical tool in understanding air pollution’s impact, especially in regions where infrastructure and funding are limited.

The SAMRC hosted its first internal event in support of World Diabtes Day 2025.

The “Diabetes Unplugged” event was a facilitated dialogue between a specially curated panel, staff and guests from the Mitchell's Plain Diabetes Club.

Through open dialogue between those living with or caring for someone living with diabetes, we were able to navigate the highs and lows and debunk some of the myths about diabetes.

One of the biggest take home messages was the value and importance of a diabetic having support at home and in the workplace.
We look forward to keeping this conversation going and making impactful change in diabetes awareness, prevention and management.
