This is a great summary of some of the research findings around the role of gut bacteria on the functioning of the brain and on mood states such as anxiety and depression. Specific strains are now being implicated in the production of neurotransmitters that influence mood states. They may also operate by sending signals via the vagus nerve (linking the brain and the digestive system) as well as via the immune system.

People often ask about cholesterol tests and what the significance of these are for risk of heart diease. Tests of total cholesterol and even LDL cholesterol don't really give the full picture. It is also worth questioning how useful these measures are when significant numbers of people with low LDL cholesterol also die from heart disease. Living in a high sunshine region, I recently tested my own vitamin D levels and despite regular sun exposure my levels were well below optimal. Supplementation is effective at raising active vitamin D levels, but if supplementing, get your levels checked every 3-4 months to assess how you are responding to the supplementation and adjust as necessary.

As the years go by it is certainly being made clear that clinicians like myself, and scientists alike, have dramatically underestimated the importance of vitamin D in human physiology
