Celebrating a Year of Service: OptiFit Outreach Leaders Breakfast 2025

On Saturday, December 6th, the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands was filled with warmth, gratitude, and inspiring stories as we gathered for the OptiFit Outreach Leaders Breakfast. It was a special morning dedicated to reflecting on a truly remarkable year of service, community impact, and the unwavering volunteer spirit that drives us all.

As we looked back on 2025, we celebrated the countless lives touched through our dedicated efforts. We took a moment to honor the incredible leaders who have given so much of themselves over the years. Fabian and Nicky Collins, after 12 years of dedicated service to Kuils River OptiFit, retired with our heartfelt appreciation. Linda Phele was recognized for her 23 years of unwavering commitment to Silvertown, a true pillar of her community. Elsies River OptiFit marked a proud milestone of 25 years, and Delft OptiFit celebrated its 21st year of service. We also honored Veronica Plaatjies for her extraordinary 27 years of service, reminding us all of the lasting impact one person can have.

This gathering was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the power of community and the importance of volunteerism. Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. Their dedication, passion, and selfless giving are the true currency of change.

As we look ahead, let this morning’s celebration inspire us to continue building stronger communities, uplifting others, and embodying the spirit of service. Together, we are making a difference—one life at a time.

Celebrating a New Chapter: The Launch of the Saartjie Baartman Center OptiFit Programme

Friday, the 28th of November, marked a momentous milestone in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence and the collective effort to promote healing, strength, and hope. We were thrilled to launch the Saartjie Baartman Center OptiFit programme—a powerful collaboration between the Saartjie Baartman Center, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, and our dedicated community partners.

This initiative, part of the Community Health Intervention Programme (CHIPs), proudly opens its 8th chapter, bringing vital support and wellness opportunities directly to survivors of gender-based violence housed at the Saartjie Baartman Center. More than just a fitness programme, OptiFit represents a beacon of resilience, empowerment, and community solidarity.

At the heart of this collaboration are individuals who believe in the transformative power of movement, music, and shared laughter. Weekly exercise classes facilitated by CHIPs will serve as a space for healing—where survivors can reconnect with their bodies, rebuild confidence, and find joy amidst adversity. The launch event was an inspiring gathering, attended by leaders from several of our OptiFit branches, all eager to bring energy, fun, and hope into a space that so desperately needs it. The atmosphere was filled with music, smiles, and the collective spirit of support—reminding us that no one is alone in this fight.

An essential partner in this journey is Blocktober champions—passionate advocates raising awareness and funds to sustain and expand this vital work. Their efforts go beyond words, mobilizing friends, strangers, and communities to contribute time and resources. They exemplify that change happens when we come together—moving from conversation to action, from awareness to tangible impact.

We are excited about what this collaboration represents: a shared commitment to making a difference, creating beautiful memories, and fostering a future where every survivor feels seen, heard, and supported. As we embark on this new chapter, our hearts are full of hope and determination. 🌟 Community Health Intervention Programme (CHIPs) Fitness Bootcamp Recap! 🌟

On Saturday, November 15th, the SAB Oval in Newlands came alive with energy, unity, and a shared commitment to health and community spirit during our CHIPs Fitness Bootcamp. This incredible event brought together approximately 120 members from all our OptiFit branches, demonstrating the power of community and collective wellness.

The day kicked off with an electrifying Zumba session led by the talented Candice Assam. Her vibrant moves and infectious energy got everyone moving and set the tone for an unforgettable day. Participants couldn’t help but smile and groove, feeling the positive vibes radiating throughout the venue.

Our dedicated SSISA personal training students took charge, facilitating various fitness stations that challenged and motivated everyone. From strength exercises to cardio drills, fun and fitness went hand in hand, making sure every participant left energized and inspired.

But the spirit of giving back was just as important as the fitness activities. Our branches generously contributed sanitary pads towards a pink drive campaign, facilitated by the EmpowerHer Programme. This act of kindness and support highlights our commitment to empowering women and making a meaningful difference in our community.

October was an inspiring month at OptiFit as our branches came together to champion Breast Cancer Awareness. Throughout the month, we hosted a series of meaningful activities designed to educate, support, and empower those affected by breast cancer.

Our teams organized special exercise sessions where participants donned pink, symbolizing solidarity and hope. These energetic workouts not only promoted health and wellness but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and self-care.

In addition, OptiFit branches participated in community solidarity walks and races, uniting our members in footsteps of support and awareness. These activities helped spread vital information and demonstrated our collective commitment to the fight against breast cancer.

We also hosted insightful awareness talks at our branches, where experts shared vital facts and resources, fostering an environment of education and compassion. To take our efforts to new heights, some of our teams hiked up mountains, symbolizing the strength and resilience of those battling this disease and bringing visibility to their courage.

We are incredibly proud of each branch's dedication and efforts. Our message was clear and heartfelt: We see you, we hear you, and you are not alone. Together, we stand in support of all those diagnosed, in treatment, and in remission—lifting them up with hope, strength, and community. On the 31st of August, several OptiFit Outreach branches joined thousands of walkers lining up to take part in the annual Blisters for Bread Big Walk. Celebrating 57 years of walking with purpose, the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk has become one of the Mother City’s most beloved fundraising events – and for good reason! It’s not just about getting your steps in; it’s about stepping up to say no to childhood hunger.

With the incredible support of our community, this event raises vital funds to provide daily nutritious meals to schoolchildren in need across the Western Cape. Thousands joined in making a difference—every step counts in the fight against hunger, and our Chippies made a difference by making every step count and had fun while doing it. . The power of collaboration is truly transformative. When we unite diverse perspectives and skills, we ignite innovation and create success that goes far beyond what individuals can achieve alone. This morning, the Saartjie Baartman Center in Manenberg, with some of their Blocktober supporters, visited our Silvertown OptiFit Outreach branch to see firsthand how our OptiFit and OptiFit Lite models are empowering communities through trained leaders. Inspired by this partnership, our vision is to expand our model and establish an OptiFit branch at the Saartjie Baartman Center, with plans to launch the Saartjie Baartman OptiFit programme later this year—aligning with the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children. The Saartjie Baartman Center does incredible work supporting women and children survivors of abuse, and through our CSR initiative, CHIPs (Community Health Intervention Programme), the Sports Science Institute is proud to collaborate in advancing this vital mission. The annual event shone a powerful spotlight on breast cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of early detection and timely treatment. Our Kuils River branch also celebrated Women’s Day by participating in the Jack Muller 5km Park Run in Bellville, symbolizing strength, unity, and a commitment to health and wellness.
