For decades, humans have tried to understand and interpret dreams. While we can’t explain why you’re running around your old school rugby field in a onesie at midnight, we can share why you dream and why you might feel tired the next morning.

We all dream every night, but most of us don’t remember them. Dreams happen during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, when brain activity is as high as when we’re awake. To stop our bodies from acting out dreams, our muscles temporarily paralyse. REM sleep is vital for rest and recovery and happens in cycles. For it to be restorative, cycles must complete. Since we only remember dreams if we wake during REM, remembering them often means your REM sleep was disturbed, lowering sleep quality.

It’s not usually the dream that wakes you (unless it’s a nightmare), but your body reacting to discomfort, lack of support, overheating, cold, or circulation issues. To move, your body must wake you from REM sleep, sometimes without you realising.
