HearUs is committed to enabling candidates with severe-to-profound hearing loss to afford a Cochlear Implant (CI), together with their long-term maintenance.

We are associated with the Tygerberg Hospital-Stellenbosch University-Cochlear Implant Unit. OUR MISSION
In 2001, Hear Us was established by parents of deaf children who have cochlear implants. Hear Us exists to financially support deaf people from disadvantaged backgrounds to obtain cochlear implants and to give support to the hearing impaired and their families to realize their full potential in the hearing world. OUR FUNCTIONS

FUNDRAISING - Money is raised to financially support disadvantaged deaf children and adults who are candidates for cochlear implantation. Financial support is also available for the long term maintenance of the cochlear implant technology. SUPPORT & INFORMATION - For any patients, professionals, families, or interested parties who require information regarding cochlear implantation and the functioning of Hear Us.

We are incredibly proud of Siyanga, a proud supporter and promoter of Hear Us, who received his cochlear implant in 2019.

Siyanga has successfully passed his Disability Studies qualification at the University of Cape Town, and we are so proud of how far he has come and everything he has achieved.

With his graduation taking place at the end of this month, we cannot wait to cheer you on. Congratulations Siyanga. 🌟

19 November 2025 changed my life.

At 76 years old, after being deaf in both ears for 25 years, I heard my husband’s voice for the first time when my cochlear implant was switched on.

I cried tears of joy, I simply couldn’t believe it.
My cochlear implant has changed not only my life, but my whole family’s. I can follow conversations, feel included, and truly be part of every moment again.
My confidence has grown so much, from chatting to shop assistants to enjoying Cats at the Artscape and hearing every word and every song.
Thank you to Tygerberg Hospital, Sherene Labuschagne and Dr Naude for giving me this incredible gift of hearing.

🌍 International Cochlear Implant Day | 25 February

Today we join communities around the world in celebrating the life changing impact of cochlear implants. 🥳

Cochlear implants provide access to sound for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss when hearing aids are no longer enough. They open the door to conversation, connection, confidence and belonging.

Every cochlear implant journey is a story of resilience, courage and renewed possibility. It is about being part of family conversations. It is about hearing music, laughter and everyday moments that matter. 💕

At Hear Us, we celebrate the individuals and families whose lives have been transformed through access to sound, and we work every day to ensure that no one is left out of the conversation.

Today we celebrate awareness.
Today we celebrate inclusion.
Today we celebrate hearing.

Those of you who follow us regularly may remember that a performance of The Tempest at the Maynardville Open-Air Festival in Cape Town last year was made accessible for patrons who are hearing impaired or deaf, with the temporary installation of an induction loop system.

We're so excited to announce that the organisers have extended their commitment and made the full run of the festival this year (30 Jan - 7 March) accessible!

There are also 2 performances accessible to SASL users -
• Thursday, 5 February 2026 – Dedicated performance for school groups (scholars only)
• Saturday, 7 February 2026 – Open to the public

In addition, they are offering 50% discounted tickets for hearing impaired/deaf patrons, as well as friends and family attending with them!

Some stories remind us of the profound impact that kindness and care can have. 🌱

This dedicated gardener has worked with pride and commitment for many years, but as time passed, his hearing began to decline, making communication increasingly difficult.

His caring employer recognised his struggle and joined him on a journey that began in 2023 to find a way to reconnect him with sound. Through every appointment and milestone, she offered encouragement and unwavering support.

The audiologist who first saw him identified that he would benefit more from a cochlear implant than a hearing aid, and her referral made this life-changing journey possible.

Despite facing profound hearing loss and challenging circumstances, he sought to approach life with strength, optimism, and warmth that inspire everyone around him.

His surgery took place on 23 June 2025, and the switch-on of his cochlear implant was on 8 July 2025.

He now hears the birds in the garden, feels safer when cars pass by, and communicates more easily with family and friends, finding joy in every moment of connection.

Stories like this remind us that when compassion and courage come together, lives are truly transformed. ❤️

HearUs Harmony 2025: Meet our MC

The MC and clarinet soloist is Dr Chris van Straten. He is Regional Medical Director at International SOS, holds an MBChB (UP) and MSc in Global eHealth (Edinburgh), and is a familiar medical voice on eNCA and Die Groot Ontbyt. He champions access to care and is lending his voice to help children receive life-changing cochlear implants.

HearUs Harmony 2025: Meet the Conductors

Music with a mission. HearUs and Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music present the HearUs Harmony Fundraising Concert 2025 in support of the Stellenbosch University Cochlear Implant Unit. Funds raised help people from financially constrained backgrounds access and maintain cochlear implants, opening doors to the world of hearing.

Reghardt Kühn

Stellenbosch University BMus and MMus (orchestral conducting) graduate and the university’s first MMus in this field. Resident and guest conductor across ensembles including the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic, and SA National Youth Orchestra. Founder of the Winelands Philharmonic Orchestra (2022), where he pairs artistic excellence with community uplift. A dedicated educator at Paarl Boys’ High and Jamestown Sounds, with 500 plus community service hours and ongoing work recording for film and media.

Dr Leonard Heydenrych

Medical doctor and concert flautist with postgraduate performance studies at the Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music. Prize-winning chamber musician and recording artist, performing on a custom Emanuel flute. Founder, conductor, and manager of the Heydeburg Orchestra (now Symphony), championing local talent and health-related charitable causes. He leads the Heydeburg Symphony Orchestra for HearUs Harmony 2025.

OUR MISSION In 2001, Hear Us was established by parents of deaf children who have cochlear implants.
